Japan was always pretty much sexually liberal. Gay sex was cool, porn* for women was cool, nudity was common and not seen as sexual (expensive clothes were the turn-on). They were basically sexually normal because they were free from christfaggotry.

Religion was less a force of repression in the east in that most people just had their base behavior in the east which didn't imply constant homosexuality and prostitution as being net goods to society.
