There has been a rise in extremism. This is obviously due to the internet. The closest parallels are improvements in media and communication like the printing press and radio. It differs in that everyone can find their own little bubble on the web where they can become increasingly extreme in their views whereas in the past they had no such outlet and had to interact with people outside their peer-group.

I don't see the majority of the population turning to extremism, only a small proportion of mentally ill and malcontents are vulnerable to it and they are unlikely to be like this their entire lives.

The biggest threats to your friends are still health problems like cancer and heart disease plus the effects of overpopulation, climate change and resource depletion.
