What? China was being exploited by much of the European powers. The whole opium epidemic was given to China by European colonial powers.

India was getting fucked by European colonialism. Japan got threatened by American colonialism and European colonialist powers were kidnapping and trying to uproot local powers.

Korea is special in that it was a client state of China. China/Japan feud bought them into the fold.

Most of the South East Asia was under European colonialism. The news of exploits of Africa and non-european countries was pretty much in the minds of elite japs when they were rationalizing their imperial claims.

Not really. It is clear that many in positions of power in Japan legitimately believed in Japan taking over from the West to slowly move the East into an equal position with Europe. What they needed were resources to make that happen and most of the places they took over only had the infrastructure to extract to begin with. Considering Japan was on a war footing pretty much from 1929 to the fall of the Empire there wasn't really enough time to develop industries in Korea much less Manchuria or anywhere else. It's equally important to note that many people in the time believed Japan. They bought into fuck the white man yellow power spiel they sold. Even the Indians bought into it and there was legitimate plans to push through Burma and install a "free" Indian state. Leaders of the Free Indian movements were in regular contact with the Japanese High Command.
