Any platform for smart contracts will have similar growing pains. Writing it in a mainstream language won't really make it easier or change all the complex concepts involved.

He's saying they should have used an obscure type of programming language (functional programming) that very few people use and is very different in usage from typical languages, so most people can't hop in and use it. Because the benefit of that would be that the program code is more secure, more clear and less bug-prone, and possible to verify for correctness. I kind of agree. For smart contracts, correctness is extremely important because they're dealing directly with money, and once the code is out there it can't be changed.
