How do we fix the plight of the american Indian?

Take away the reservation privileges and have them managed by the Feds. 65% of them now live off of reservations but the ones who don't are getting totally screwed over because corrupt tribal officials keep pocketing all the money.

Give them some actual autonomy in making laws. Any time they try to use their status as quasi independent entities in a manner that'll actually help them financially the Feds have an autistic meltdown and block it. See attempts at legalizing marijuana on their reservations, offering private internet services and data centers, and the current efforts by reservations in California to open firearms businesses and sell off-roster handguns.

More radically, I think giving large tribes their own districts for the House of Representatives and state bodies would be a great help. Many are in this weird limbo where they can't really influence state politics due to the aforementioned quasi autonomous statuses, and thus their problems go unaddressed. I know the Cherokee are entitled on paper to some non-voting reps in the House, and there's a big push lately to actually follow through with that part of their treaties.

If you strip way the anger that seems to seethe in that answer, it is the correct answer.

A lot of people don't realize how much our system continually screws over the reservations - they have very little autonomy when it comes to making and enforcing their own laws, and also cannot rely on the state or federal gov't for law enforcement or protection. It's the worst of both worlds. The reservation trust system often keeps them from making use of their land in productive ways, and the funding system even pits the various tribes against each other, essentially making them compete for funding - for basic necessities, I mean, not "gibs." And that's not even touching the grotesquely dysfunctional shitmess that is the Indian Health Service.

Most (not all) reservations are shitholes for wholly preventable reasons, things that could still be corrected today if anybody gave enough of a shit. It's not just "well, they got a shitty hand dealt to them two hundred years ago and there's no way to correct that now."
