I am only qualiifed to speak about Iran, so i'll give a little summary here. This is the only true and unbiased history of modern Iran you will find online.

It must be noted that c 1900, Iran wasn't much different than any other traditional middle eastern state. It wasn't a shithole by any measure, but it wasn't anything special. The Persian Empire had shrunk long ago, and by this point the country had no international sway.

Post-WWI it was decided by the Brits and Russians (without Iranian governments knowledge of course), to take over half the country each (S & N respectively) and begin taking over assets. The Russians did not do very well in the North half, but I believe the British had significant influence in the Southern towns.

Note that this began much earlier than the "Anglo-Soviet Invasion of Iran" as you will find on Wikipedia.

It was also at this point that the Qajar dynasty ended, and the "western friendly" Reza Shah was put into place (mainly backed by British and American intelligence).

Iran did not do much during WWII, except grudgingly supply the Allies with oil, while trying to get Hitler-senpai to notice them and their Aryan heritage. Mid-war was the "Anglo-Soviet Invasion". A military exertion of control they already had.
