Most of my family is French Canadian, they constantly strive to achieve of the platonic ideal of true French. It's something hard to describe to those not immersed in honhonhon. Last time I visited they were livid over Albertan oil. Alberta having oil meant they weren't poor pieces of shit, and French self worth is a direct function of how impoverished and miserable your neighbors are. They badly wanted Trudeau to smash the pipelines so the rest of Canada could stop mattering.

Frenchness IS smugness. This is why the Francophone world is a world--they don't need anything in common except a language and being smug about people outside said world. That is how you achieve French of mind.
