What actually happened:
>Afghanistan has a progressive, westernizing dictator
>women's rights are being expanded, there's focus on education, land reform, increasing the labor force, electrification, etc
>country is increasingly becoming more western and prosperous
>only problem is the president wants to foster closer ties with the USA, and the Soviet commies won't stand for that
>Moscow organizes, funds and supplies a coup that deposes this progressive president and puts hardliner pro-Brezhnev communists in charge of Afghanistan
>commies, like always, start backstabbing one another, accusing one another of being CIA or Pakistani spies in order to win over Moscow's favor, several more commie coups follow
>country is in total chaos now and hemorrhaging money, the government launches a mass collectivization reform to counter it which takes everything from people who are already poor
>USSR has enough of the squabbling commies in the government, KGB outright assassinates the head of the state (look up Shtorm-333) and puts their own puppet they've been sheltering and conditioning in Czechoslovakia in charge
>the people's unrest reaches critical point, 60% of the army defects to join the uprising, the puppet government is now completely helpless
>Soviet troops are promptly "invited" to help, Soviet military ass rapes the country, bombs the infrastructure to the stone age, causes 2 million civilian casualties and even more refugees fleeing the country
>Americans see an opportunity to get back at commies for the fiasco in Vietnam and start indirectly arming the rebels in the early 1980s through Pakistani channels
