Well, Britain wasn't by any means ripe for Fascist takeover.
They ruled over more land in the interwar period than ever before in it's history, wasn't hit too hard by the great depression, and already had authority-figure types to march around in pomp ceremonies about. The country didn't appear to the average man to be declining, so they didn't have that revanchism needes for fascism to root itself.

Strictly speaking people back then didn't think of the nazis as the monsters they were made out to be during and after WW2. Even today a rigid and proper analysis of the Hitlerian regime in the public is largely impossible on grounds of it being too recent.

Today you can talk of the benefits of Genghis Khan's Mongol Empire but back then people saw him as a genocidal tyrant. And that is not to say that Hitler was wholly good. He wasn't. There were positive and negative aspects to his rule and whether or not these aspects were positive or negative is different for different people.

So long story short. Hitler was probably not a nice guy but we can't be trusted with our judgment because we are still too morally invested to analyse him.

In the late 1930s, Leadbelly wrote an anti-Hitler song. It talked about his cruelty to the Jews and how America needed to fight him. This was before anyone knew about concentration camps, or even before America entered the war effort. If a black folk singer who had spent most of his adult life in rural prisons and had no relationship with Germany saw Hitler as a bad enough figure to write a song about, that's a pretty good indication most viewed him negatively back then.
