Slavic was a language (or a group of languages) that became the lingua franca of Eastern Europe during a shit period of history where all kinds of barbarians migrated into all kinds of directions. A lot of these tribes, of various origins, came to form the Slavic masses which further mixed with and assimilated the natives of the lands they migrated to. The natives (like Dalmatian Latin-speakers) were an easy target for assimilation due to the collapse of Roman infrastructures.
Avar, for example, are a non-Slavic people, yet it seems that they have also adopted Slavic language for the sake of simplicity and the ability to communicate with many other groups that formed their force. Turkic Bulgars also adopted Slavic after settling. Etc. So Slavs are not so much an ethnic supergroup as much as they are a linguistic one.
