Charlemagne wanted to marry Irene of Athens

>Charlemagne wanted to marry Irene of Athens
>Irene "seriously considered" it
>she was persuaded not to by one of her beta orbiters who wanted to usurp the throne for his brother
WE COULD'VE HAD A RESTORATION OF THE WESTERN ROMAN EMPIRE

WHY IS HISTORY SO CRUEL

Carolingian gavalkind would have balkanized all of Europe and Asia minor, it was for the best.

>Christian
>Roman
Pick one and only one.

Imagine the sex

>Marrying LARPer descendant of people who destroyed the real Roman empire

>a roman-larping frank marrying a roman-larping greek
what's the problem

Na, both.

Okay

ERE didn't really have the same succession laws as the Franks did. Someone else would have probably taken the throne in Constantinople.

>marrying Charlemagne

>barbarian marrying a roman

>barbarian
charlemagne was a civilizer
he was the culture hero of dark age europe

this

Byzantine politics and court intrigue being what they were, I very much doubt it.

Greeks will defend this

It would not have led to an actual union between the two but it could have definitely been a step in the right direction in rebuilding ties between the East and West.
Charlemagne should have been crowned Western Roman Emperor.

How did the Franks destroy Rome? Hell, by Charlemagne's time they'd already mixed so much with the Romano-Gauls there that they were as much Western Roman than old Frank.

>Khan'd

>inherits east and western roman empires.
>becomes high king of Rome.
>invades Spain and btfo's the Umayyads.
>cripples abbassids in the east.

>A barbarian larper becomes emperor of Rome despite having no claim to the Roman throne in Constantinople

Why on earth would anyone want this?
