It's really shared among the first three that the FPBP just cited. Commerce and money are part of culture, and these three rule the roost on that as well.

The so-called "world cities", the top-dick Alpha+++ rated places for all of the things just under discussion, are NYC, London, Paris and Tokyo.

Notice that in the link I've just given, Muh Economics is the central category. A Muh Culture person could validly push back on this, in an effort to answer the OP's question a different way.

The world no longer has culture, so there is no cultural capital.

Commerce is certainly a part of culture, but it's not the only part.
I could definitely see New York being it tho. With all the books, and movies and stuff like that made there, as well as all the business that started and are run from there.

>Paris
>London
Lol sure

I dunno if I'd consider nyc cultural, sure many "cultural" things are hosted here in various venues but the city itself is pretty soulless

Just my worthless two cents as a life long resident

It'd be unreasonable to expect every single inhabitant of the city to be that way I guess. "capital cultural" is hardly an official title anyway, and it's hard to properly define.

cultural capital doesn't mean the people are highly cultured, it refers to the level of culture in the city. NYC is most certainly the cultural capital of north america with its multiple world class museums, cinemas, and theaters.

I dunno man it's like...nyc is just a place where commerce is done, whatever "culture" that follows is simply stuff done as an afterthought brought in to entertain the investment bankers and their rich clients and tourists. There is no "scene" really except for maybe Broadway plays.

Cultural center implies a sort of creativeness and originality. Cultural creation not a place to display and consume it. I'd rank a place like LA because of Hollywood as an authentic cultural center way before nyc.

As another lifelong resident of NYC, I'll have to disagree. I'd posit that California culture is the quintessential American culture now consumed across the world but NYC is still the cultural capital of America, if that makes any sense.

Everything is produced in LA though. Sure NYC has plenty of theatres and galas and what have you to showcase stuff, but it doesn't produce much, and even the stuff it does produce like late night tv shows are simply a corollary to the Hollywood movie scene.

Eh maybe there's a bit of a comedy scene in nyc but 90% of all comedians are unfunny trustafarians.

Hollywood is in itself a soulless automated factory of movies anyway.

>metropolitan museum of art
>natural history museum
>museum of modern art
>broadway theaters
>numerous off broadway theaters
>at least 10 art house movie theaters that I can think of off the top of my head, I'm sure there are more. Many of them are used to 4 wall independent movies, meaning they're the only place in the world where that film can be seen.
>extremely vibrant music scene

When was the last time you went to an off broadway show? New productions open up every single week.

Literally half of your list is just a warehouse of other culture, Broadway yeah okay, never was too much of a fan the dadcore hipster rock music scene of Brooklyn but even that I'd say a place like Portland is more known for.

Access to culture != Creation of culture, therefore in my mind nyc is not a cultural capital, although of course it outranks a smaller city that would only have three or four museums or something.

I notice you conveniently ignored all the parts of my post that talked about the creation of culture

what rubbish, access to culture is exactly what makes something a cutlural capital. People are bringing the culture there, it has far more culture than anywhere else, hence its a cultural capital.

How much of that is simply because of their sheer population and economic standing?

Sleeping central European towns with populations of a 100k and preserved 18th century architecture feel more than authentic than any of those mega cities, watching people bust out an accordion over beers outside of a cafe that has been in operation since 1900 is a sight to behold, maybe I'm just an amerifat tho...

Can a whole country?
Brazil

Modern culture is culture too tho

Well, porn does seem to be a huge part of the "culture" being created nowadays.

some of it is amazing, but some of it isn't exactly authentic anymore because of tourism

I mean yeah, economically powerful cities tend to be cultural centers too. people can have different definitions of culture, but in terms of things that vast numbers of people are exposed to/aspire to/enjoy those cities are majorly important. I'd probably include LA in that too.

If I had to give a top 10 in no particular order desu

New York
L.A.
Edinburgh (over London)
Amsterdam
Berlin
Milan
Rio de Janeiro
Tokyo
Melbourne
Shanghai

New York and California

>Milan Shanghai Tokyo
I'm not influenced by them, smelly weaboo.

>Edinburgh (over London)

Butthurt Jock detected. London, by any measure, is one of the most influential cities in the world even today. Edinburgh isn't even the most influential city in Scotland.

>Edinburgh (over London)

Unironically Atlanta. On top of the obvious it's got large groups of refugees from various commie / radical Islamic hell holes so it's a proper free market multicultural society.
