My mother's family descends from flemish traders who fled to the Netherlands after the spanish fury, Some genealogist has researched the family and it goes all the way back to merchants in Brugge in the high medieval era. The family got pretty wealthy during the dutch golden age, owned quite a mansion (now under water, yay to the Netherlands) and created a weapon crest. A painting of that weapon crest is currently in some dutch museum as far as I know.
In reality they were probably just well-off land owners but I assume they enjoyed LARPing as nobility.

From my father's side I don't have a lot of information other than the fact that there was a famous pacifist who was friends with Aldous Huxley, who even wrote a foreword in one of his books.

I don't really know much, other than the fact that he was for the most part stationed in Ilijaš near Sarajevo.

We were watching some documentary on TV about the Siege of Sarajevo and how they were literally starving etc, besieged by the Big Bad Serbs.

He got pissed at it and almost threw the remote through the TV. When I finally got him to calm down, he told me that every night there were VRS trucks leaving our outposts for Sarajevo, and they certainly weren't headed for Serb-held parts of the city.
Whether this is the case of an infantryman misunderstanding something or if there really was something at specific unit, I don't know.

What I can tell you with near-certainty is that our officer corps in that war were for the most part complete scum - he told me of officers neglecting command to sneak off and do heroin with hooligan "volunteers" from Serbia proper.
The smuggling, war crimes, and plundering go without mention ofc, again aided by our dear brothers from Serbia.

I've got an unusual amount of Irish and English DNA, that's very genetically "pure" as the family comes from remote parts of the British Isles that are little affected by various migrations and invasions. There's a very distinct forehead shape that me and my brother and most of the males on my mother's side of the family have, apparently that comes from inbreeding.

my family has a cemetery somewhere in new France (muh privacy) that was created somewhere around the time of the first colony the cemetery itself is quite large and filled with both famous relatives such as musicians, aristocrats along with relatives that lived simple lives.

it's very interesting to know how diverse of a bunch they are.
