Depends on the year. Until after WWII conditions were pretty bad, and during the war death rates were especially high. Most people who entered left alive though, seeing as the camp population peaked in the early 1950s.

I can't remember the name, but I also seem to remember Tolstoy having a good one about the Gulags when they were under the Tsars, but I might be mistaking it for someone else. I went on a Russian literature binge a while back and it runs together a little.

1. about 15 million total passed through the gulag
2. average sentences were 3 to 5 years
3. most prisoners were criminals, not political prisoners
4. they never held more than 2 million at any given point in time (so yeah, about the same as the u.s. prison population).
