Stop it with this myth already. The Japanese government has repeatedly apologised and paid reparations. Few Japanese today would deny the war crimes happened.

This is true, but the 'myth' persists due to a conceited effort on the part of the Japanese government (in addition to the Korean and Chinese governments) to appeal to their conservative minority.
Shinzo Abe, for example, issued one formal apology, and then the next day went to the war shrine with 80 ministers (which houses class A war criminals) and said they were not criminals under Japanese law. So it's a bit of politicking over there. The Chinks likewise run the national narrative of 'MUH IMPERIALIST AGGRESSORS' as a means of promoting national unity and domestic consumption, and have done so ever since the 1950's.
