YOur Favorite Philosophers and other Great Thinkers

Post you favorites. Mine is Diogenes, he is literal hobo who told Alexander the Great to fuck off and BTFO'd Plato.

>be Diogenes
>go to BTFO Plato once more
>He is talking to some friends
>Haven't washed in since 30 years
>Still some cum left on your beard from when you wanked one out in the street
>Fuck Plato he is a faggot
>Sit on his couch naked and dirty
>Look Plato in the eyes and say " I trample upon the pride of Plato"
B T F O

Oh. What are his 3 best ideas?

Spinoza

>shit let me google it

He had no ideas, just one. Humans overthink everything and have complicated everything that has been given to them. He just wanted to live life like life should have been lived in his own eyes.

I mean its admirable. Thoreau's Walden springs to mind.

But in the words of the greatest modern philosopher Karl Pilkington speaking on a saint that went to live in the woods "that just means you couldn't hack it"

> writing your ideas

lmao i am gonna live in barrel and shit on plato.

>meme philosophers

Cynics believe that the most important part of living is virtue, and they believe virtue is obtained by being true to yourself and shunning societal pressures and desires.

Diogenes is the most extreme of the oldschool Socratic cynicism

Virtue is important. But what makes asceticism virtuous?

Because you're living in tune with nature, and nature is the true system imposed by the universe.
Cynics view civilization as a misstep, and that desires which resulted in society are disastrous to the human psyche. Animals only eat to not be hungry, and dwell to avoid rain and cold, and humans should too.

What of our higher nature? I mean in reality if we are going to say "it is natural" shouldn't I be distilling my own alchohol and drinking every day? after all addiction is natural and elephants brewing apples shows that alchohol is natural. What parts of my nature are natural?

>shunning desires
>masturbating
What did they mean by this?

Sexuality is just a natural function, like defecating. Saying that masturbating is wanton is like saying defecating or eating is.

Just because something is pleasurable doesn't make it an earthly desire

So in the modern world I should watch porn all day and wank?

At what point would it be unnatural to be warm and drunk and wanking all day?

Diogene didn't need to masturbate, it's was only for pleasure.

>The historicity of the accounts by Plutarch and others has been questioned, not least by G. E. Lynch in his article on Diogenes in the Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology. Lynch points out the problem that Alexander did not have the title given to him until after he had left Greece, and considers this enough of a problem with the anecdote such that it (alongside the notion that Diogenes lived in a barrel) should be "banish[ed …] from the domain of history". "[C]onsidering what rich materials so peculiar a person as Diogenes must have afforded for amusing stories," he continues, "we need not wonder if a few have come down to us of somewhat doubtful genuineness.".[3][15] A. M. Pizzagalli suggests that the account has its origins in the meeting between Alexander and the Gymnosophists in India, and was handed down in Buddhist circles.[3][16]

What did he mean by this?

>M. Pizzagali

Ha

Live a simple life
Shit on Plato
Masturbate in public

Without trying to sound like a retard, this book changed my life. Gotta be that super-man, surpass my human condition

thx user, had a nice chuckle

I did not know super-man would shitpost on Veeky Forums. I am surprised he faps to traps too.

Did this guy ever get his ass kicked? He had to have.

Never, at least not that I know of. People loved him. When he told Alexander the Great to go fuck off, Alexander said 'If I were not Alexander, I would wish to be Diogenes" and Diogenes replied "If I were not Diogenes, I would also wish to be Diogenes"

David Hume

my top 3 philosophers: Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris and Bertrand Russell

Some of my favorite philosophers, their works and related secondary literature would be,

1. G.W.F Hegel - Phenomenology of Spirit & Science of Logic/ Frederick Beiser does good work in clarifiying things in his works German Idealism: The Struggle Against Subjectivism and Hegel
2. Aristotle - The entirety of his corpus/ Aquinas, Averroes and Hegel have interesting commentaries
3. Lev Shestov - All Things are Possible/Athens & Jerusalem
4. A. N. Whitehead - Science and the Modern World/Process & Reality
5. David Hume - A Treatise of Human Nature
6. Duns Scotus - The Ordinatio

I think late-period Schelling may be interesting too, but I have to look more into that.
I would encourage others to check these people out.

...

Got to wonder about this. I mean sometimes you just wake up to your own bullshit and he must have had a moment where he woke up and thought "I'm being miserable and cold in a barrel wanking, wtf am I doing with my life"

Then the counter thought come in "Diogenes you've been preaching about how this is the opus of humanity for a while now. You'll just look like a fuckwit if you back out now"

Sadly crawls back in his barrel and has a crysterbate
