19th century France

>19th century France
>Suddenly the French start wanking off Vercingetorix
>This is just after France had been "reinvented" by Napoleon

What the actual fuck happened here? I know that it was in vogue to suddenly dig up ancient figures and start wanking them off at the time (the British suddenly started pretending Boudica wasn't a pile of shit, and the Germans based their culture of savagery on Arminius' betrayal) but why did the French opt for Vercingetorix and not the more obvious Caesar? The parallels between Napoleon and Caesar are so incredibly obvious, it barely needs explanation. Why did they not opt to base center their Romance(!) culture around one of the greatest military and political minds to have ever lived, and instead opted for some unwashed barbarian who ended up challenging said military genius for about five seconds? Not even the "muh republic" argument makes sense, as both Napoleon and Caesar had semi-republican modes of ruling while Vercingetorix' authority more closely resembled the Ancien RĂ©gime.

>Romance(!) culture
*chuckle*

There is no such thing

>why did the French opt for Vercingetorix and not the more obvious Caesar?

because Vercingetorix was French you fucking autist

Because Caesar was as Italian as Napoleon, and they needed a home-grown hero of their own, not an import

reminder that Corsica is French

Romanticism. Caesar wasn't French, Vercingetorix was the ancestor of the french.

In that time period Corsica was as French as Hong Kong was British

Differences between Hong Kong and UK:
-entirely unrelated language group
-a whole different civilization...
-...from which stems a completely unrelatable culture and set of morals
-completely unrelated religion and beliefs
-no prior common History whatsoever.
-at the FAR East of a different continent.

Differences between France and Corsica:
-Corsicans speak a slightly different bastardized form of vulgar Latin.
-local regional cultural differences, no more or less pronounced than in any other French region at the time.

He also lost horribly.

Well, to be fair, so did Caesar and Napoleon

Not outnumbering your enemy 3:1 and losing horribly.

"French" also englobes the guys living in the South of the country. Aka predominantly descendants of Roman, greek and iberian colonists and tribes. Calling Vercingetorix French is like calling some random Lazyge chieftain Czech or something.

It's was the fashion of the time, look at boudicca or other nationalist wank, it's fashion.

surrendering is a proud french tradition

I, too, just watched the latest Historia Civilis video

His new video about Vercingetorix is good.

But calling them Gaul would be apropiate.

>tfw complained yesterday that he hadn't released a vid in a good while
>come home from work today
>30 minute video on the gallic wars

Why does everyone in this picture have the same face?

Vercingetorix is a nigger gaul, Asterix

Maybe because Caesar was Roman, invaded us and killed/enslaved our ancestors?

dunno

Obsessed.

bet you're a brit

What if your ancestors are from Provence, what then?

You say it like its a bad thing. The genocide of the tribes and their integration into a larger state was going to happen either way, and to be [spoiler] frank [spoiler] you have more in common with them and the romans then any celt.

Gauls were far from unwashed barbarians

>living in the South of the country. Aka predominantly descendants of Roman, greek and iberian

American """""education"""""
