First of all, bait. But I'll fall for it anyways because it's 2:00 in the morning and I stopped giving a damn.

Second, as some other Anons and Namefags have stated, Japan had already raped and pillaged the hell out of Manchuria, China (Nanking in particular), and Korea. Look up pleasure women, it's atrocious. So they are not as innocent when it comes to murdering... innocents.

Third, the atomic bombings were a combination of last resort before invasion and live weapons test. We wanted to see what they'd do to a city (hence Hiroshima was spared from most major bombing runs) but we also wanted to force Japan to captitulate without having to invade the nation itself. This operation (code named Downfall) was to be the single largest amphibious assault in history and in preparation for the massive casualties anticipated the War Department ordered/scrounged for one million body bags. Body. Bags. And that was just the estimate for American casualties, the projections for Japan was in excess of two million. If the bombs could stop this assault, then millions of lives, especially American lives (us being the ones who dropped the things) would be spared.

Fourth, the killing of Japanese civilians was monstrous, an act of wartime desperation that is terrible in every regard. The killing of any innocent men, women, and children is terrible, yet such acts do happen. It is hard to properly justify the act, in fact it is damn near impossible without sounding like a psychotic jackoff, but only after the war has ended. During it, morality loses out to victory, and people believe that the end justifies the means.

Finally, if you want to discuss such a controversial topic, have some fucking class. It seems over half this board is just bait threads now, with no actual discussions that are of any depth. I'm not expecting Stanford level chatting but still, come on Veeky Forums, we're better than this!

I remember watching a documentary where they said Americans didn't know the full effects of atomic bombs when they used them which always stroke me as strange.

They even showed footage from after the war where they tested nukes on captured Japanese ships and said that Americans though they could wash radiation away with water.

We should have gone with Operation Downfall, which would have involved 15 nuclear weapons used on military and civilian targets, gas attacks on civilian centers, a land invasion involving literally millions of American and Soviet soldiers, with death tolls estimated in the tens of millions for the Japanese, which would have utterly destroyed the nation and most of its most important and ancient landmarks, so that what was left could be divided between American and Soviet spheres with the Soviet side almost certainly still lagging decades behind to this day

That's SO much better than what we actually did.
