Hitler didn't need any convincing. The SA from the beginning was almost impossible to control and never fully loyal to him. This was especially so before Rohm but the problem didn't abate with his appointment to lead it. Goebbels and Himmler certainly benefitted from episode but Hitler knew for a while of the SA threat to his absolute power. It was in Hitler's nature to procrastinate though so he only took action when had festered to a critical point.

It kinda was in that Hitler carried out brazen acts of murder without the slightest bit of due process and got away with it.

It also showed the SS would obey any command given to them, including killing their own comrades. From that point on, getting them to kill Jews, Gypsies and other perceived racial enemies was easy.

How many of the killings were carried out in a publicly visible setting (the victim is shot dead in their office, home, on the street etc.) as opposed to be arrested and then killed out of sight in a prison?

On television and film, they tend to show the victims being killed in their home or at work rather than in prisons.

I'm curious to know if there's any truth in these portrayals (SS men in uniform killing the victims in full view of the public) or if it's just a bunch of overdramatic crap.

It depended on the area. Generally if it was a small European village, you could depend on them being pretty racist and they murdere them in public view. There are a bunch of accounts of small towns in Lithuania tried to help and making a huge spectacle of watching nazis kill people. Cities on the other hand were more cosmopolitan, so nazis often had to forcibly remove the Jews from the city to a rural area before killing them. Here's an account below, from Kaunas in Lithuania, then a village.

"A young man – he must have been a Lithuanian – with rolled-up sleeves was armed with an iron crowbar. He dragged out one man at a time from the group and struck him with the crowbar with one or more blows on the back of his head. Within three quarters of an hour he had beaten to death the entire group of forty-five to fifty people in this way. The young man put the crowbar to one side, fetched an accordion and went and stood on the mountain of corpses and played the Lithuanian national anthem. I was informed by bystanders that this was the Lithuanian national anthem. After each man had been killed they began to clap and when the national anthem started up they joined in singing and clapping. In the front row there were women with small children in their arms who stayed there right until the end of the whole proceedings."

This is wrong on all accounts. Goebbels was initially a strasserist and only much later defected to Hitler. Himmler was indeed a complete cock mongler, but he alone wasn't behind the purge. It was the industrialists, the military brass and the Junker noblemen who felt the socialist wing of the NSDAP was a threat to their existence, so they basically gave Hitler an ultimatum, either he purges the socialists, or Hindenburg will call for martial law and depose Hitler.

Hitler wanted to do something about the Jews. Himmler proposed that bullets are cheaper than tickets to Madagascar or Palestine.

Goebbels was a Strasserite for like a year in 1925, after that he jumped on board with Hitler and undermined Strasser from the late 20s until his death.

Ironically in the end Himmler wanted to save his ass and stopped the Jew transports in direct violation of Hitler's orders and tried negotiating a peace treaty with the Allies separately from Hitler. This infuriated Hitler so much he immidiately declared him a traitor and ordered him arrested.
