How reliable is this guy?

Lets just say his looks do not inspire confidence.

He seems to be OK, and I enjoy his videos. He's a Youtuber, btw, and focuses heavily on medieval weapons, warfare, and culture. It' s the first good picture I could find.

You're him aren't you?

Nope. I just have watched a lot of his videos and want to know if I'm learning reliable information, or if I am wasting my time.

>wooden chair in front of wooden wall

hang a drape or a banner or a flag or fucking SOMETHING to break it up you retarded faggot.

...

Like this?

The embodiment of reddit

The guy has 170,000 subscribers, and nobody here has even heard of him, let alone seen his videos?

This is a Matt board

Ah. Not even Skallagrim?

Metatron would probably be the #2. Maybe Lindyboo, ironically.

Behind the chair, doofus.

So more like this?

Can't stand Metatron. Sounds like a noob in a tin can with Windows Movie Maker.

>Muh English and French castles
>What the rest of the world had effective castles with different designs than the aforementioned which were just as effective if not more so?
>who cares they are shit
>machicolations are the most important feature of the castle

He's an Australian Mormon who's never seen a castle and he's full of shite

See this? A REAL answer. It only took almost an hour.

he shouldn't talk about martial arts because he doesn't do them.

>durr you shouldnt talk about battles because you are not a general
hey, life of the party, go easy on the punch

>its un eleet prakticul kutanu.....mother!!

what a loser, I bet he wastes his time playing video games too, fking loser

He's so good damn cool.

>That shirt with that jacket

You'd have to see a castle to have any knowledge about their construction

I enjoy his videos, and I don't think he has any good reason to make things up.
Either way, it's not like any of them go into much detail, almost all I've seen from him is comparing real life things to fictional things (castles, weapons and armour, etc) from films and vidya.

Maybe that gets old, but I only watch his videos when they're suggested to me which isn't that often.

good lord

You should follow the rule as you would with any other amature youtube channel. Take it with a grain of salt

I watched a few of this guys videos as they came up on recommended, and the content was pretty good, but I had to stop watching becuase he is just such a gigantic faggot. I usually have a pretty high tolerance for that kind of thing too.

Idiotic Mormon cunt.
He rants about myths and falsehoods that people regurgitate. Proceeds to do it himself.

Dave Rawlings tore his ass apart on the subject of HEMA, which was quite fun to watch.

>posting the picture of Western fat guy holding a katana
>expecting Veeky Forums to respect him

>ironically

Fuck off, Lindybeige is unironically the GOAT historical Youtuber

That autistic shirt with a jacket, fucking terrible

Unironically kill yourself, please.

Quite a bit different. martial arts are physical culture they cannot be understood without partaking in them

If you just want to discus the performance of various troops and strategies that is a little more abstract.

Shad thinks he is qualified to talk about the ins and outs of various sword arts without having any reference point or experience.

oh yeah that's right i forgot his name was shad. he singlehandely kill the chad meme

I don't know shit about castles but his castle shit feels kinda right, like, being on a hill and shit that seems like a good idea.

>his castle shit feels kinda right

As far as observing the fucking obvious. According to him anything that doesn't have the typical western "castle" features is shite.

Just an example. He clearly stated that having external stairs leading up to a wall not enclosed in a tower is a horrible designs that leads any enemies who ware up in the walls directly to your castle, then he states that a postern is small enough an opening to be easily protected by a few men, while failing to regognize that a flight of stairs 70cm wide is just as easily protected. Nearly all Byzantine, Serbian, Croatian, Wallachian, Bulgarian fortresses had external stairs and not once did those stairs contritubute to the fall of the castle. Further more, they didn't have murder holes, they didn't have machicolations, they didn't have hoardings, and yet when the Sigismund's crusade tried to take such an antiquated by Shad's standards fortress absolutely shat itself dead

None of the YouTubers have any degrees or certifications assessing anything.
That includes Shadycast.
Nicholas Lloyd only has a degree in archeology, and his specially is factually not weapons nor combat.
Skullfuckgrim and Scholargeladria are also LARPERS as is Metatranny.
And yes, even that pathological listen that does the Witcher nonsense and light saber nonsense is full of shit.
The "YouTubers historical fighting guild" has never been in a fight in their entire lives, nor do they have degrees in anything related to the topic at hand.

>Scholargeladria are also LARPERS
Matt Easton is a qualified and respected historian who has written several books on his area of expertise. He's the only historical Youtuber who actually knows what he's talking about. You're full of shit.

Matt Easton has academic credentials and the HEMA background does add a lot of legitimacy to his statements.

Also, people with degrees aren't automatically right about things. Before HEMA and similar movements started to gain traction even highly acclaimed academics were regurgitating a shitload of myths about things like the weight and handling of medieval arms and armour.

>Shadman
>mouse facing door.jpg

Thos guy is a complete idiot. He can't even calculate the extra lever power from the curve of a blade and says blades were curved for looks

>He [Easton] 's the only historical Youtuber who actually knows what he's talking about.

Dave Rawlings knows his stuff on HEMA too. (and has a pair of great cats who hide in his kitbag.)

Roland Warzecha (Dimicator) really knows his shit about i.33 and the likes, rather than the later lichetenaur tradition HEMA most of the others do. His biggest failing is simply he's not a natural orator/presenter in English. his German stuff is far better.

Lloyd (lindybeige) is slightly competent on classical greek stuff, which is a subject he got his degree in. But is an insufferable cockwomble for the rest of his shit, which is as often about D&D cliche as reality. I know for a fact he's turned up at HEMA training events, spent a weekend doing rondel dagger training having never used one before, and then the next week brought out a video "all about" rondels, where he completely makes up his own ideas. Avoid him like the plague.

Shad is enthusiastic, but often wrong. To his credit, when he's wrong, he will gladly admit it, and correct himself when he is provided with data (like the series on falchions he did).

Skallagrim is a slightly creepy furry who smacks swords against tree branches like a complete idiot. Avoid like the plague.

Thrand is a redneck. Enough said.

>None of the YouTubers have any degrees or certifications assessing anything.

And that means very little in the world of arms and armour.

AVB "nick" Norman, one of the greatest historians of the 20th C and curator of the Wallace Collection and the Royal Armouries, gained a degree in art history, and became a volunteer at the Wallace collection to start his career.
Ewart Oakeshott - now considered one of the greats of the 20th C was an illustrator by training.
Swordsmith Peter Johnsson was trained as a graphic designer, while his hypothesis on the use of geometric underpinnings is now recognised as an absolute certainty.
Claude Blair's degree was a basic history degree from Manchester, (Though his MA was on the Henry VIII silvered harness.)
JG Mann is one of the few whose entire training was in arms and armour, with his Oxford Thesis on evolution of 14th C armour being overseen by Guy Francis Laking.

Really up until the turn of the century, arms and armour degrees of any sort were the exception, rather than the rule.
Since that date, more specialised academia has started to become more commonplace - Dr Tobias Capwell's thesis on english armour in Leeds, Dr Fabrice Cognot in dijon, and Professor Daniel Jaquet in the university of Geneva are three of the rare few who combine martial art, horsemanship, and practical study in HEMA with their doctorates. Goll and Dupras' PhD's on armouring are likewise ground-breaking, but neither is a HEMA-ist.

Veeky Forums self-loathing kicks in immediately

>his hypothesis on the use of geometric underpinnings is now recognised as an absolute certainty.
Really?
Last I checked his own opinion is that there's no way to be sure, and there could be confirmation bias.
However, he is one hell on an authority on medieval sword design. His stuff is fantastic.

Nigga he's Australian it doesn't get any more Eastern than that

I wish his mic was better, has a very small echoe.

t. mad Frenchie

given the number of smiths and historians who are in agreement (Capwell, Savage, Jaquet, Le Chavalier, Immel, Cognot, Elmslie, Todeschini, Kopciuch etc.), and the number of papers and books its been in (so far, Park Lane Arms Fair 2012, Noble Art of the Sword, The: Fashion and Fencing in Renaissance Europe 2012-13, Deutsches Klingemuseum "das Schwert" 2015), I'd say its pretty well established - particularly when combined with Professor Robert Bork's findings on the geometric construction of Cologne, with the surviving papers of that which show pinholes.

the fine details are still being ironed out, but there's no doubt that a lot of it could not be simple coincidence. There are also a number of period texts from the 16th C rapier age which reference "Mathematical" swords, which hints to the design process. The smoking gun will be if someone finally finds one with compass marks in the blade, or design drawings, but even without that, its pretty clear that the basic principle of Johnsson's hypothesis is correct.

>want to know if I'm learning reliable information, or if I am wasting my time.

Wikipedia is more reliable. So yes, you are wasting your time.
