>be ares

Aresfags leave, Athena is based

The Ancient Greeks pretty much all hated Ares. He was the least liked god of them all, and as user says, the proverbial bitch of myth. He gets his shit kicked in by Diomedes, a literal mortal.

>Ares had an adulterous affair with the goddess Aphrodite but her husband Hephaistos trapped the pair in a golden net and humiliated them by calling the rest of the gods to witness.
>During the battle between Herakles and Ares' villianous Kyknos (Cycnus), the god intervened but was wounded by the hero and forced to flee back to Olympos.
>When the Aloadai giants laid siege to Olympos, Ares battled them but was defeated and imprisoned in a bronze jar. He was later rescued by the god Hermes.
>in a bronze jar
Ares was the god of failure.

>sources
>written by poets
>aka string beans who don't like fighting
No wonder Ares is made into a bitch.

>REEEEEEEE Ares is stupid
>Ares worshipping Romans conquer you easily
What did the Heavens mean by this?

he's essentiar whorf tier, supposedly tough, but gets the shit kicked out of him regularly to establish badass characters

>muh conquest is everything

>myths written by Athen-ians
>Athen-a always comes out over Ares

Hmmm, I wonder who could be behind this?

Mars was a different god than Ares. He's one of the Roman gods to be the least like a cheap pallet swapped copy.

Except he wasn't really liked anywhere.

lmao at your "gods"

>The Lacedaemonians didn't like their Patron God
Where are the Doric records, Atticboi? You mad, did some Agoge tried Spartan Chaddecles steal your Catamite?

Is this why they had his statue in chains, you memer?

It represents the restraint shown by the Spartan people, to show that he was Sparta's. The way of Lykurgos, the Agoge, the spirit of its kings and Oligarchy.
Attic children cannot understand Lacedaemonian valor.

Ares was always looked down upon as the violent stupid brute who could be easily bested by intelligence (Athena).

>by attics
FTFY

Ares is pretty much just a personification of war, not a fully fleshed out "character" like Apollo or Zeus.

Please stop dragging the Lakonians through the mud.

Ares was a shit tier god and definitely not the principle god at Sparta. If you want to discuss Spartan religious views, you must first discuss Athena, Apollo, Artemis, and Poseidon. Then, move on to heroes; I have visited the Menelaion, and there's also Herakles, Kastor and Polydeukes, Achilles, and Asklepios.

I'm sure you could go on. Somewhere far down the list is shit tier Ares.

Each city had one or sometimes two patron gods, they wrote peons to their own patron and talked shit the patrons of rival cities. We only really have the stuff the Athenians wrote to reconstruct the mythology, tho, so we get things like Ares seeming to be a dickhead god that you can't imagine anyone worshiping because Ares favored Sparta. In Sparta, Athena was seen as an unfaithful and treacherous god while Ares was one of the patrons of the city.

Where to even begin. The stories told here to mock Ares, such as being owned by Diomedes and caught by Hephaistos, come from Homer. Further, Ares was not the principle god at Sparta. Not even close.

Also, Spartans held Athena in high esteem. She was the guardian of the city. She had one of the most prominent temples. There are multiple primary sources for what I'm saying, but see Pausanous for that particular title (protector of the city) and the presence of the temple. Actually, the 5th c. general Pausanius (different person) sought refuge in that temple.

they only worshipped phobos

Ares is literally everything the faggy philosophers who wrote the majority of the surviving myths hated of society. It could be that most Greeks viewed him more positively. The Romans and the Spartans treated him better cause they were martial people.

It should be noted however that if you compare Ares to all the other greek gods, he has way way less myths about his wrath towards humans for slights. Also many of his myths involve him protecting his children or descendants. And when men call for courage its usually Ares. As well as controlling rage.

He's a complicated figure cause he's a complicated subject. Anger, violence and destruction, an evil, at times necessary and sometimes positive.

That's what neospartacucks actually believe.
Always remember that your name is now SPARTI. The ionian pronounciation.....phew....

>Athenians
All greeks bullied Ares. He was a sort of "evil" god like Loki that people ought to mistrust and fear. He was afterall the embodiment of the uglier sides of war.
Modern people have a very weird concept of Ares, which is like 99% Mars instead, a really rather different god conceptually. Actually that's an issue for more than a few greek divinities, who saw the roman pantheon supplant them in everything but literary presence.

No its because Ares represents the horrid side of war as in carnage and death rather than Athena and Nike who represent strategy and victory. Everyone in Greece tended to hate him as what he symbolizes was also hateful.
