When did the stick shift stop being commonplace in America?

Why did other countries not give it up?

Americans were able to afford it while yuropeans claim that they are superior for driving a 1l penalty box in traffic.

American's claim to be about self reliance, choice, freedom, and personal liberty, when in reality they're fat dumb fucking idiots who need their car, and their state to tell them what to do. The modern american man, he does not want control, he does not want responsibility, all this it wants is plop his fat gunt in front of the television and watch american idol, so the celebs can tell him what politician he ought vote for.

Americans are, and always will be, fat fucking loser pieces of shit, who NEED to die.

Die you fucking americans, find the nearest sledghammer and cave your fucking skulls in.

This is true, and I'm a Yuro.

Tell us how you really feel

Dat butthurt. I bet all my money that you are some salty dreamer that will have to go back to your shithole now that Trump is putting an end to your party.

Probably around the time that automatic transmissions became more common than manuals

>complain about america
>on an American site
>made with American mark up language
>on an American computer
>running on American internet
>using American language

>their state to tell them what to do
This is a bizarre claim given the history of Communism, Socialism and state intervention in general in the United States compared to Europe. It's especially baffling after the post-Reagan years where there has been a visible and persistent battle against keeping what exists of the American welfare state at all. 1/10 see me after class

>who need their car
Public transportation is the means of conveyance for most persons in every major city on the eastern seaboard. 3/10 at least somewhat grounded in fact.

>Die you fucking americans, find the nearest sledghammer and cave your fucking skulls in.
Being this upset. About the United States [see image appended]

Here in Argentina virtually all cars have the stick although automatic can also be bought

The common explanation of the homo argentinus pitecus is that "automatic is for fags, macho men use manual"

I hate this country

...

I use a Ford in manual.

I like it that way, feels like I am more the operator of the car rather than just the goofball in the driver's seat. Also niggers can't drive manual, and your car won't get stolen.

They still are commonplace.
There are like so many millions of cars in the US that even like 25% of them being manual would still be millions and millions of cars.
I have owned 1 automatic car, out of like 10 cars.

>driving autotragic

...

>>The common explanation of the homo argentinus pitecus is that "automatic is for fags, macho men use manual"
Same in France.

Cars are more vital to American way of life because our country is spread out. Not like Europe where cars are just a hobby for rich people, you can be all elitist about how "it's not a REAL car unless it's a pain in the ass to drive!" or whatever. Cars were made easier to drive so more people could drive them because that's what was practical.

>France
>Claiming any driving superiority

youtu.be/n51OdFlOi1o

No idea but besides fun factor for some people, manuals are literally inferior to modern automatics in every way.

> English
> American
You got me to respond. 5/10.

AT has a higher fuel consumption. We europeans are poor.

>American internet
I am sorry but we don't have data caps here.

congratz on all the (you)s, friend. have another.

there isn't a single nation on earth that has good city planning and has car centric cities
t. urban planning is a hobby

New York City
>Designed for cars.
> Orderly grid
> Easy to get around
> Large subway

Boston
> Designed for horses, walking, and witches broomsticks in 1630 and never upgraded
> Maze-like
> Get lost forever
>Non-euclidian geometry
> Why is a subway car on the street behind me!?

Imagine being this mad

Euro here who drives both. Automatic actually gives more control over your car.

Grid plans predated carfaggotry and is present in ancient civilizations. They were to facilitate horses, wagons, and most importantly, livestock herds driven into the city.

Want a city designed for cars? Fucking LA.

...

>Why did other countries not give it up?
95% of road/street network in US is made of straight line while it's rather uncommon in Europe. In my countryside no one would drive an automatic for practical reasons.
Plus they used to be more expensive.

>Be Automatic Transmission.
>Battery fails for whatever mishap.
>Cannot do a running start.

>Be Automatic Transmission.
>Use shitloads of fuel.

>manuals are literally inferior to modern automatics in every way.

Please give me more info on this. I mean, I have an auto and I can choose to lock and change gears in it, but people who drive stick have told me they prefer the control manual gives. Does it really give you at least some kind of more meaningful control or efficiency, or are automatics only completely superior on high end cars?

>driving manual
>hard

You must be a complete retard that shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel in the first place if manual transmission is enough confuse you.

>English
>American

You're really proving his point

>American mark up language
Who is Tim Berners-Lee?

You gave me a good kek. Here's a (You).

...

well various test even around tracks with professional drivers have shown that automatic clutches are just better at this point
however, i drive the 1999 mercedes c - class of my grandpa somewhat regularly and its old automatic just fucking sucks and shifts pretty awfully in many ways
personally i'd rather drive stick than a shitty automatic, but a good, modern automatic is simply superior
also fuck being stuck in traffic with a manual

...

In past automatics had issues, like slower gear switching, worse reliability and so on. Gear switching could affect you under different conditions, for example when turning.
Now it's all fixed and unless you're an incredibly good driver you won't get more out of a manual. Modern automatics are superior.

Then why don't they use autotragic in sports like rally if it gives more control?

Because those are excellent drivers. You're not them. And Formula 1 cars use semi-automatic for example.

>Because those are excellent drivers
If autotragic is superior to manual, why put a manual gearbox to a rally car? Wouldn't the autotragic rally car win every time given similar skillset of drivers?

>also fuck being stuck in traffic with a manual
Manual petrol. Diesel, you just put it in 1st and use clutch instead of gas.

Only true men fondle around with sticks at yea dick height.

Again, those are excellent drivers, you're probably not, and neither are majority of people. Thus under general conditions modern automatics are superior, if nothing simply because they are more fuel-efficient.

If you're trying to race then sure It's better to have control over when your car shifts but were not racing are we? When you're driving around in the city it's a lot more comfortable driving an auto because you can focus solely on your driving. You don't have to dick around with the clutch and stick every five seconds. Especially when going slow it's really comfy driving auto because you never have to worry about the engine stalling.

If you concede that autotragic doesn't give more control, why make such a claim?

You're a special kind of retard if you manage to stall out an engine heavy traffic.

Men use a gear stick, women and shit drivers use automatic

>european opinions

>Being a Manual Driver makes you a god among American Drivers
Jesus.

I thought the efficiency gap was just about closed these days?

That's bullshit. Driving with manual is easy enough and saying that cars in Europe are 'a hobby for rich people' is complete nonsense.

>saying that cars in Europe are 'a hobby for rich people' is complete nonsense.
This is highly ironic considering the popularity of Jap Automobiles in the USA.

spbp

t. autotragic

kek, quality post

>seeing american tourists trying to drive manual cars on a twisting road on the edge of a cliff in lashing rain in the west of Ireland

>braking whenever a car is coming the other way
>braking for every slight bend in the road
>drive at 25% of the speed limit
>needing to rev the engine to the redline for 30 seconds to take off in first gear

How the FUCK are you allowed to drive anything

American here

I just never had the chance to learn to drive a manual. In driving school all the cars were automatic, my parents drove automatic and therefore bought me an automatic car.

I'd love to learn but I'm not even sure how since no one I know has a stick shift.

Autotragic pros
>Faster in the quarter/0-60
>Can hold more power
>More efficient than the average idiot with a stickshift
>More convenient when you're texting and driving

Manual pros
>Faster around the track
>More reliable over time
>More efficient if you have half a clue how to drive
>More fun and engaging

/thread

Automatic transmission first became popular with truckers for ease of use in interstate travel. It caught on from there .

I don't identify with car culture at all. I'm just waiting for electric to become less glitch-prone.

Are you even allowed to drive manual cars when you did your test with an autotragic? Where i live it's mentioned on your licence if you're a disabled automatic user and aren't allowed to drive manual.

Not for petrol.

But diesel, yeah.

In the USA you are

That's a fucking retarded idea that only a dumbass yuro could come up with. If you don't know how to drive manual, you won't be able to start moving in the first place. If you do know how to drive manual, there's no reason to keep you from driving one.

Literally why would you ever want another factor to pay attention to on the road? Not even american but it seems like a total waste of time.

Semi is for faggots who think theyre racecar drivers.

well, obviously you sperged out there, but this is definitely true in a lot of states or certain places anywhere really. there are a lot of cushy towns in texas that are like that.

Lol found the woman

I live in a city with a lot of hills and lots of stop and go traffic, so I always drive an automatic. Sticks can be more efficient than autos, but only if you play strict attention to hitting your shift points, and don't have fun with them.

Cops and taxis all use automatics, and for good reason.

Americans cops use auto because like all Americans theyre fat lazy fucks

>Average American "driver"

youtu.be/gISwkPJRo1E

this is the same for me, i just never had the opportunity to learn.

Originally it was because manual transmissions were cheaper to manufacture but now its just a convention. Its also more fuel efficient if you drive it correctly (downshift)

By downshifting you are referring to engine breaking? How is that more efficient? Also no brake lights to warn following motorists.

Really? Do European police cars use manuals?

no, you idiot. only true if you mean newer autos.

in usa, they don't care, they pass virtually anyone.
however I took it in a manual and got extra brownie points for it.

I wouldnt know, im not a euro either ;^)

downshifting to a lower gear at higher RPM, it only works at transitional speeds and if your car (like most) gets more miles on the highway

>no brake lights to warn following motorists.
Good, i need a new rear bumper ;^)

Yep.

a shart made this post

>Circuit of the americas

Veeky Forums here, that's some weak normie tier b8.

Because Americans like technology and automatic is clearly superior. I got a manual license, nearly failed the test due to stalling.

The problem with manual is that you WILL fuck up changing gear from time to time and this will ware out your gearbox. It doesn't even save you money. You will need a new gearbox sooner. Just get an automatic.

>make a sportcar about feels
>its only available with a dct from a dodge dart
Literally every American sportcars had a manual for the base model. The F10 M5 was sold with a manual only in north america.

Why don't American cars have cranks any more. Starter motors wear out, batteries go flat, push starting requires people, roll starting requires a hill and jump starting requires another car. Cranks are reliable and therefore better.

It will reliably rip your arm off, I'll give it that.

Yes but they used grids for their colonies. Their mother poleis were never on a grid (see: Athens) because they developed organically.

iirc they had a ratchet gear to stop that exact problem. To be fair I would put money on no one here having ever actually used on, myself included.

>Also no brake lights to warn following motorists.
Based fucking retard

Wait, what? Most Americans use automatic? Damn, you Americans really are fucking dumb. Driving manually isn't even that hard.

>american idol
jesus christ how old is this pasta

>Using a car to drive to work instead of riding a horse
dude what the fuck? it isn't even that hard.

Manual transmission is the best anti-theft measure in Murika

>I got a manual license, nearly failed the test due to stalling.

Lol sounds like you cant actually drive bud
