They can say whatever they want, but they aren't the same people, it was 2000 fucking years ago, Rome was conquered thousand of times and thousand of genocides happened there, and the actual Macedonia is not even located where the real Macedonia was.

The fleets were composed of a mix of wooden ships and ironclads. The Italian fleet of 12 ironclads and 17 wooden ships outnumbered the Austrian fleet of 7 and 11 respectively. The Austrians were also severely outmatched in rifled guns (276 to 121)

At the moment when the Austrian ships started attacking, Persano, while sailing in the line formation with three ironclads in every squadron, suddenly decided to change his flagship. He left Re d'Italia and boarded Affondatore which was out of the battle formation, in order to be able to "intervene where it would be needed the most". By doing so, he caused confusion amongst his officers and disrupted the battle formation by leaving an empty space between the van and the center.

Seeing things going badly, Persano intervened, deciding to ram the unarmored line of battle ship Kaiser rather than one of the armored ships engaged with the Italian 2nd Division much nearer him. However, Kaiser managed to dodge Affondatore.
