They were a Christian military order. That alone is reason enough for interest.

Americans think they were English (while they really were French)
And Americans are obsessed with English history (muh ancestors)
So Americans are obsessed with Templars, and since they're the cultural hegemon, everyone in their sphere of influence (The West + Japan) is obsessed with them as well

Symbolize some form of European unification against an outside, non-European force/group, specifically Islam.

>why are people obsessed with the real historical example of jedi knights who also created the first world banking system

They got /x/ memes that go back to the middle ages. This makes them the most well known crusaders/knight order so they also feed on people obsessed with the crusades, creating a retroactive cycle where crusade hype feeds templar hype and viceversa.

The Crusades as a whole maybe, but Templars were pretty much all from the same country (at least 90% of them)

I mean, does this list look "diverse" to you?

Whether or not they actually were from all over europe does not matter. They still symbolize it to a lot of people.

Because their Armor looks pretty damn cool and was eye catching when I was a kid

Also this

Crusading was mostly a French and Norman thing.

The real question is why aren't more people interested in the Knights of Malta?

The Templar all got executed by the French king on charges of heresy and under mysterious circumstances. That's literally it. They're the world's oldest conspiracy theory bait. They're medieval Roswell.

I've met quite a few people who mistakenly group the two organizations together

>Confusing Crusaders with Templars
>Saying that the Teutonic Order, the Templar Order, the Order of Malta, etc., were "all from one country"

Typical Veeky Forums brainlet.

I would guess Assassin's Creed had something to do with its popularity among normies, though unfortunately as a result of this most people end up viewing them as some kind of Illuminati.

they were a lot like the doomed Romans before the sun set of their empire

>reading comprehension

He said Templars were all from one country, which wasnt the case of Crusaders as a whole

Assasin's Creed used an already well established meme to sell his game to the normies. It didn't bring much new to the table as far as templars go, they've been the /x/ medieval guys for quite a long time. See the Da Vinci Code or Indiana Jones. All innovations in AC are in order to create an arch-rival that transforms an islamic proto-terrorist organization into some kind of liberal jihad.

The virgin templar and the chad hospitaller

Did the head of the Order typically wear a crown like in this pic?

Because Umberto Eco, Dan Brown, Harrison Ford, Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, Henry Lincoln, and Nicolas Cage.

>no conspiracy theory is complete without the inclusion of the Knights Templar

God's kingdom is all the one country friend
