Syphilis is most assuredly a New World disease. Skeletons from pre-Colombian contact have the characteristic holes in their bones. We have monks and other first hand accounts describing the natives having a disease that sound a hell of a lot like syphilis. Mind you, the missionaries and monks were aware of syphilis and even compared the affliction to it.

We have evidence that syphilis of old in Europe is a different disease than the one we know today. Diseases, especially deadly and crazy virulent ones, exert as much evolutionary pressure on their host populations as they do on it.

By all evidence, syphilis had a goddamn field day with Europeans until it evolved into a less virulent and "fitter" form for spreading and its own survival. You don't get far as a disease if you straight up kill your host and there's crazy amounts of evolutionary pressure to not burn through host populations and kill them like Sherman burned through Georgia.

Ultimately, we got a disease way less inclined to straight up kill than to linger and spread as it SLOWLY kills. We also got European populations more able to contain the disease with their adaptive immunity. Though it's admittedly more the syphilis spirochete evolving than us.
