Well first of all all nations that exist now are winners in some sense because this fact alone is a big deal. There have been many more nations that didn't make it. Poland is also relatively large. Sure it used to be the biggest state in Europe but at one point it was weaker than Bohemia. Now it has bigger population than them, access to the sea and it's not that small by European standards. Almost all central/eastern European countries that we have today lost their independence during 16th or 17th century. Poland was the last one to fall but its fall was by far the biggest. So let's break down its history.

10th century to 1025/1032 - Poland is quite effective and for a young nation pretty influential (host of the meeting with Otto III in the year 1000 was supposed to be the leading Slavic nation in his empire). Victories in the west and the east.

1025/1032 to 1034 - Pagan Reaction and conflicts that king Mieszko II inherited from his father. Anarchy, the state barely survives. It's saved by Kasimir the Restorer who returns from abroad to take the throne (pic related).

1034 to 1138 - Normal shit

1138 to 1320 - Polish Game of Thrones. High Duke divides the country among his 4 sons Verdun style. Poland loses significance. For a long time branches of the dynasty fight for domination.

1320 to 16th century - Lots of stuff too many to mention. Vibrant renaissance, no dynastic problems then golden age. Victory against the Teutonic Order etc.

17th century - Silver age. Great victories and all but way too many wars.

18th century - One giant failure and Poland loses independence

1795 to 1864 - Time of continuous uprisings.

1864 to 1918 - Poland goes underground to preserve nationhood. Regains independence in an amazing style.
