Japanese lose 4 fucking carriers in Midway

>Japanese lose 4 fucking carriers in Midway
holy fuck, what went so wrong?
was it just bad luck or were they just that fucking incompetent?

Bad damage control procedures, like the fact that Japanese ships had a dedicated damage control team rather than giving everyone the training like on American ships, results in much of the losses Japan experienced that weren't instant sinks.

they fucked with 'murica and they got fucked

Using pre-treaty carriers (minus the Shokaku-class, which were treaty cheats anyway) were extremely fragile. When you combine extreme vulnerability (as in, one bomb has a chance to kill the whole carrier) with the fact that technology and carrier tactics of the time of any country was incapable of stopping an enemy strike from hitting your carrier, you had to be prepared to lose your carriers if the enemy found you.
US could have lost all 3 carriers if the second strike from the Hiryu had found CV-6's task force rather than hitting CV-5 again.

>attack against an enemy who has broken your codes
>in wargames that you had done before the war and which had involved you losing
>against an enemy who will only need to stand and fight if they're pretty sure they can win
>divide up your forces to hit meaningless Alaskan Islands and do the same with your invasion fleet
>Have horrible damage control
>Have horrible reconnaissance
They really were just that bad

How much would 4 carriers were in those times? I know Modern Carriers are expensive as shit, but approximately how many dollars did the Japs lose? It feels like it'd be the size of a small nation's budget.

CV-7 was lost after 2 torps, CV-8 was dead in the water after 3 (small) bombs and a torp, CV-5 was dead after 3 bombs and 2 torps, CV-2 was sunk by 2 bombs and 2 torps. Damage control helped prolong the sinking, but even US pre-treaty carriers were easy to sink.

Shattered Sword says the Akagi, including the refit, cost as much as the Yamato, but SS is notoriously unreliable and unsourced, so who knows.

I'm not saying the US damage control was infallible but was definitely better then the Japanese damage control teams that had actively made things worse, such as the Taiho, where they vented gas fumes throughout the ship like idiots.

>, such as the Taiho, where they vented gas fumes throughout the ship like idiot
Opening the doors didn't make things worse, as the fumes in the hangars would've sunk the boat anyway. The idea that Japanese were idiots and they got their ship killed by being dummies is a fairytale for chilren.

What are you talking about user? All opponents of the allies were immoral, cunning and stupid; yet also formidable. They were great opponents to be slaughtered on the way to an inevitable victory, but only in the way that you kill a threatening lion ... or octopus.

The thing that armchair tacticians near always fail to consider is how in a real battle you have no idea what the fuck is going on at the time. Newsflash retards if any general had the benefit of a historical record of their battle to research every aspect of they would never lose.

That said, it was because of bad intelligence.

It was also really fucking awful luck though since the carriers were caught rearming hastily meaning catastrophic fires were an inevitability once hit.

Also the Dauntlesses arriving late.

The monetary value isn't really as important as how irreplaceable the boats were

They were already goner before that.

The carrier supports were already done for.

>The monetary value isn't really as important as how irreplaceable the boats were

It is pretty telling that when it came to building massproduced carriers for war time needs yanks went with 27k ton design and built 17 of them during the war (and couple more after the war) while Japanese only managed to get out 3 of their 17k ton ships.

>All opponents of the allies were immoral, cunning and stupid
I wonder who could possibly be behind this post munching crumpets and sipping tea

He's obviously making a tongue-in-cheek post but that requires the audience being smart enough to catch on.

Stupid fucking nips.
Poked a fucking bear with a stick

heh... not so fast...
*invokes poe's law and discretely slips away*

It worked the last time so why wouldn't it work now?
>completely ignore the fact that russia was technologically backwards state that was lacking behind in industrialization process, had little to no ability to actually supply its forces in the far east, and was being torn apart from inside by class warfare and nationalistic movements among its various ethnic minorities and even then the war brought japanese economy on its knees

>holy fuck, what went so wrong?
His name was Chester William Nimitz and he was the greatest commander of WW2

Spruance was really the one who won Midway. Nimitz's job was more strategic in scope.

I mean, he was decent
