What a fucking shitshow.

Imagine being a Central/East European born in 1900
>fight through WWI
>live through Nazi occupation
>live through Soviet occupation
>die behind the Iron Curtain having known nothing but war and despotism for the majority of your life

>"Soviet occupation"
is this what americans call it?

I agree doe OP. 21st isnt gearing up to be any better, we can just block out 85% of the rest of the world thru tv and video games

On new years eve of 2099 you'll come back to this thread and laugh uncontrollably

All in all, it really was pretty bad.

>tfw you'd be lying in some muddy trench right now if you lived 100 years ago
So many good people died just for being born in the wrong time and place.

Eh, we're doing better 17 years in than they were.

I'd honestly rather be doing that right now. I would trade lives with any soldier that died in a world war. I think about doing that allot. Giving them the life a hate. They'd probably live happily. I just hate this boring mediocre life. If I had some consistent pleasantries in my life and I had a house I was happy to come home to then maybe it would be bearable to go on. Even then I don't think I'll ever truly be happy with how things are without deluding myself with some liberal complacency. I'd just be another unimportant figure on the sidewalk.

Either go outside and find a happy or kill yourself, stop complaining faggot

*Find a hobby

If you want some excitement go fight with the Kurds.

I have hobbies but most are big investments and for the most part only serve as temporary distractions. I would kill myself but at least for now living my shit life is more interesting than living no life.

Isn't the war pretty much over? No point in going then. Besides I heard once the war is over there will probably be a civil war between the socialist and whatever other Kurds. Also who knows what Syria and Turkey will do. I don't know allot about Kurdistan and the conflict desu.

This^^^

They'd have something to live for and I'd have something to die for.

Imagine living through a time when people actually believed in something?

How terrible.

We're in for either a worse or just as exciting time

hope you're ready

>Attack of the Ulster Division
>Ulster

Fuuuck, I feel bad for those lads. Imagine being conscripted and forced to fight in the grueling battles of WWI, enduring chemical warfare, disease, and the trenches, all to further a government that literally occupied and invaded your homeland and then proceeded to oppress you and your religion. Feels bad man

The middle part of the 21st century is going to be far worse.

I imagine most of those serving in the British Army would've been Unionists.

t. Black and Tans were primarily composed of WW1 veterans

Why couldn't the Central Powers have won WW1

Why couldn't the Central Powers have not chimped out and destroyed Europe.

Eh, most if not all of the volunteers would have been, but I doubt the volunteers even came close to outnumbering those conscripted, especially from that region.

Those are some aesthetic paintings at least tho

irrelevant, the world would still be a better place

cute tiel

You are still free to die for your beliefs, if you want.

2500 - 3000 is when shit is really going to get weird

Conscription was never imposed on Ireland, only Great Britain. All Irishmen fighting in the British Army in WW1 were volunteers

Oh, I didn't know that, thanks for educating me, that's very interesting. Although I suppose it still applies, if less so, to Scotland and Wales.

Scottish nationalism wasn't really a thing back then. They may not have considered themselves English, but they certainly considered themselves British.

Hmm, interesting. Ignorant American here, this has been a nice conversation, I've learned a lot thanks. Where you from user?

Nowadays, New Zealand. I spent four years in England for university. But most of your conversation was with someone else.

Let's do this

Because it would have been worse for pretty much everyone involved.

I voted for Winnie.

Wasted vote IMO. NZFirst is polling low while the Greens have come back. It's looking like a Labour/Greens government unless more people tick for National like me.

Don't forget the Spanish Flu.

>So many good people died just for being born in the wrong time and place.

This. The politics of last century won't be half as deadly as the stacking environmental clusterfucks we've been towering up.

juden

This, but unironically

>barley survive ww1
>1939
>notthisshitagain.cartoon

Goddamnit, quit making me cry.

Great-grandpa wat least died happy living on a farm and riding motorcycle. It was a different generation. Though he still had a shitty time on the front and in oflag.

The Spanish Flu didn't reach Central/Eastern Europe

youre a gaylord

>Implying we'll still be around by that point in any functioning form of civilization

>be born in 1920 USA in a state like California
>mostly white, quiet rural town
>graduate
>do your part in the war
>go back, become mayor, become governor
>become president during the golden cold war years
>retire, die at the "end of history" in 1993ish.

That is the life I wish I could live.

welsh do not want independence and they never have done since like 1200

The war is still pretty much going on:

Go to Syria and kill some ISIS scum

>I would totally trade my life with a WW1 soldier
>But I can't bother to do an hour of research about this war I could be fighting on.

The 21st is shaping up to be far worse.

Right now it's quite boring. 2010s are almost over and right now they're indistinguishable from the 2000s as far as culture, fashion or climate of the decade go.

>multiple cat 5 hurricanes a year
>rise of the far right
>potential new cold war
>boring

>as opposed to living in the world they fought for, one which I hate, I would rather die creating the world I hate.

Are you actually retarded?

>hurricanes cleaning non-whites from the Gulf Coast
>bad

This is just fucking pathetic. You know nobody actually liked fighting in WWI, right? And here you are envious of guys who were mutilated, shell shocked, or else killed in horrific conditions.

I'm not a jew

Maybe the very tail end of the 00's, but most of that decade is pretty damn distinct from the 10's. I really can't imagine a band like Smash Mouth being a big hit these days on the radio, edge culture is now relentlessly mocked, the internet wasn't nearly as prevalent until only the last couple of years of the decade, ditto with smart phones, and the goth scene that was highly present in the early-mid 00's is effectively completely dead, just as some random examples completely off of the top of my head. Hell, even just regular cell phones didn't have total saturation until the very end of the decade, and that's one of the defining features of the 10's.

Depends what time and who you are. White male, middle class, 1950's. You are doing swell.

>1950's
In Russia.

Yea, that's why I said it depends on who you are.

You should've added "where you are" as well. Most of the world was a shithole in the 1950s, with very few exceptions like America and West Germany.

Not really, Most of shitty places was behind the iron curtain and other communists states. A lot of the Western European states in NATO were rebuilding from the destruction of WW2 but they were doing okay mostly.

Britain was crap, France was crap, Spain, Italy and Portugal were even worse, Africa was a whole next level of shit, Japan still didn't undergo the economic boom, both Koreas were still shit, etc. I guess Scandinavia was good. America really was head and shoulders above everyone else when it comes to living standards, for obvious reasons.

I can't help but feel the peak of human civilization is happening right now.

Most of those western countries recovered pretty fast from the Marshall plan. Africa has always been mostly shit, even to this day. Korea was having problems long before WW2.

>Most of those western countries recovered pretty fast from the Marshall plan.
Depends. Western Germany did, other countries like Britain not so much. In Spain, it wasn't until '59 when economy truly kicked off. Portugal was a hellhole until it joined the EU in the 1980s.
>Korea was having problems long before WW2
I never said it wasn't, but it was still a bad place to live in the 1950s.

This is correct For any Western country, 1950s-early1960s was a golden age. The world economy was booming, society was optimistic and forward looking, real wages had been continually climbing since WW2, extreme poverty had been erradicated, and social inequality had dropped to the lowest point in Western history.

This was my city in 1962:
m.youtube.com/watch?v=YhTrmYzp4gE

Of course, if you were living in the Eastern Block, Africa, Asia, or the poorer parts of Latin America life was pretty shitty, but for everybody else it was the best of times.

The late 1960s brought us Kennedy's assassination, the end of innocence, pointless wars, the 1970s oil shock, the threat of nuclear annihillation went from being a feared distant possibility to almost happening, then came among the stagnation of real wages, economic deregulation, wealth inequality returned, the collapse of Russia, terrorism, crime, ISIS, the loss of manufacturing to China and insane culture wars pitting women against men.

Call it the peak of Western civilization, or white privilege, or whatever you will but the 1960s were the best time to be if you were white and on the right side of the Iron Curtain.

Though they still had a long way to go, Southern Europe was comfy by the 1960s, most of the catching up had happened in the previous years.

>21st isnt gearing up to be any better

this is the most peaceful, advanced and prosperous time in human history...

you a woman senpai....or maybe a hobby. perhaps you should visits Veeky Forums, /out/ or Veeky Forums?

Our prosperity is built on a house of cards. Just wait for the resource wars.

>Isn't the war pretty much over?

join the French Foreign Legion then...they go find wars to fight.

It wouldn't be so bad. My family was really rich back then and opened what has become a large saving bank today.

My bad thought you meant the 19th century. Pic is from 1860s.

they didn't have conscription in Ireland during WW1.

You could imagine being French Basque...or a Pole in the Germany Empire....they got conscripted.

Like I said, the Western European countries were doing pretty good, but I guess that's a debatable topic which we could go into. As for Portugal, I really don't know much about that country so I can't speak about them. I brought up Korea because you mentioned them.

I never said Korea was good before the 1950s so not sure why you acted like I did.

>social democratic ponzi scheme bound to collapse coupled with insane fertility rates in the third world which is already destabilizing the west

The 21st century is gearing up to be even more violent than the 20th.

Because you brought them up. Korea was never a good place to live so why would you even bring them up?

>WWI
>Spanish flu
>WWII
>Holocaust
>Cold War

Tens of millions dead. And some people think today's world is full of death and sadness.

I think for us Americans, today's world is shit because it's all so indecisive. At least when Pearl Harbor got bombed, the entire country actually rallied around the flag to fight the Axis and we got some sense of closure by beating the shit out of the Kraut and the Japs and forcing them to bend the knee four years later. 16 years after 9/11, we're stuck fighting the same damn war with Al Qaeda and have next to nothing to show for it except for an increasingly expansive surveillance state, economic decay, half the country hating the other half, and a disheartened military that's shell of its former self.

I mean we're not really losing, but we're definitely not winning either, and it's becoming increasingly intolerable.

>time on the front and in oflag.
Care to greentext whatever experiences he told you?

>is this what americans call it?
No, its what most of the world calls it because most of us are not retarded communist apologists.

Let me expand on that last statement.

We're not really losing in the sense that Al Qaeda or ISIS are invading and burning American cities like the Russians did in Germany at the end of WW2 but we have failed to make any decisive and measurable progress in defeating them. There has been no Osama bin Laden signing terms of surrender and ordering his men to lay down their arms and in all likelihood, there won't be. So it feels as if it's all for nothing.

IMO, the fact we have neither decisively defeated Al Qaeda or been decisively defeated by them is one of things driving a wedge in modern America.

We didn't even want to join the last time. We were dragged into it by the Japs.

Ernst Jünger seemed to have enjoyed it. I'm sure he wasn't the only one.
