Was Othello black?

...

"Black" as in "dark haired". If he was African, he would have been called "Ethiopian" or "Moor".

1. He was written by a Britbong who had never seen a Moor in his life, so Veeky Forums's racial autism is irrelevant to the discussion.

2. The play contains multiple textual references to his blackness, e.g.

>For God’s sake, sir, you’ve been robbed. Get dressed. Your heart’s going to break. It’s like half your soul’s been ripped out. At this very minute an old black ram is having sex with your little white lamb.

The name of the play is "The Moor of Venice"

>"Black" as in "dark haired"

It takes place in Italy.

To add to the above, note that the tradition has always been for the lead playing Othello to wear blackface.

>written by a Britbong

Shakespeare was black

Don't buy into professor Russel's sjw bullshit.

The term for moor would be someone who resembled the rapper French Montana. Or someone from Morocco area, or perhaps Granada. He was Black because of his characteristics, most likely tanner in complexion to someone of northern Italy.

I bet you think the History Channel's depiction of Hannible is correct too. Just remember also that whiteness was never a term until coined by the eternal Anglo to rein superiority over the masses.

>le Moor means Berber
Then why did the Spanish call the Muslim Filipinos Moors? Seems like it's a term for Muslims rather than race, and some coons happen to be Muslim

WE

>rationalizing THIS HARD to retcon the appearance of a fictional character whose defining characteristic is his dark skin

It doesn't matter whether you think Moors are black because SHAKESPEARE thought Moors were black.

Because in the play they go to war with Muslims but don't call them moors?

Because then the audience would think he was Turkish

Shakespeare's depiction is of Othello is black face to distinguish the outcasted appearance that Othello had. Shakespear often had to perform for the common man, he uneducated man. The man that most likely had traveled very far and did not understand the concepts of moor vs African. Othello mentions god and heaven often, where as if he had been Muslim he would have mentioned another name for god.

So did shakespear depict Othello as black for himself or for the average peasant?

Had not traveled very far*

Why do we call native Americans Indians?
Why did Christendom Crusade against the Turks?
Why do Britbongs call Arabs Pakis?

Maybe he was, we never know his full back story besides that we was a slave and soldier at a very young age

>Why do we call native Americans Indians?
Tradition
>Why did Christendom Crusade against the Turks?
The better question is why aren't we doing it again? Turks tried to kill the Pope
>Why do Britbongs call Arabs Pakis?
They don't, they call Arabs wops

Wop mean greasy Italian

>He was written by a Britbong who had never seen a Moor in his life
I would bet a million bucks he'd at least seen a Moor at some point. London was a massive port city, and Moors got around.

Wop means greasy brown cunt, Arabs qualify

something something big curvy swords

Either way Brits still call Arabs Pakis

By the 17th century? Yeah possibly. London wasnt a metropolis by any means and it certainly was not a clean place to be, so it wasnt a desitnation of beauty like a place such as venice was during this time. But its not impossible that shakespear saw a moor.

There was actually an African Muslim converted to xianity who died in Britain in the 14th century. But I don't have the link to source it for you rn.

moroccan ambassador to queen elizabeth, would've been active in the later years of shakespeare's life

it was originally what the romans called northwest africans, and as they were the majority of iberia's muslim invaders later on it gradually became a term used to describe any muslim the spanish came into contact with

My bad, that answer is my default for all the "was [medieval European person] black?".

>he's been trying to convince people on an anime imageboard that a FICTIONAL CHARACTER was white by looking up pictures of Moroccan ambassadors in real life
>he's been doing this for EIGHT HOURS

>For God’s sake, sir, you’ve been robbed. Get dressed. Your heart’s going to break. It’s like half your soul’s been ripped out. At this very minute an old black ram is having sex with your little white lamb.
Quote the fucking text not the cliff notes you fucking scrotum

Othello wasn't real.

In Shakespeare's play, he's a Moor, a North African, converted to Christianity and living in Europe. He's noticeably darker than everybody else, and his darkness makes him seem monstrous to some of the other characters. But it is his character, not his color, that leads to the tragedy that is the subject of the play.

In the recent past usually played by actors of sub-saharan ancestry, because otherwise Shakespeare is not exactly brimming with black roles, unless you do color-blind casting, which is pretty prevalent now.

I assume it is only a matter of time before somebody does a white Othello and a black Iago. And starts a riot.

Also, is Captcha sentient now???
