Read Das Kapital, not all labour is the same obviously. I believe Marx mainly talks about labour that produces use-value but i could be wrong, so read Kapital

The work done by the machine is proportional to the damage done to it. If you work a machine for 7 hours you eventually have to invest 7 hours of maintenance on it. Meanwhile you can work a man 8 hours and only have to pay him for 4, as said 4 hours wages would be enough to sustain him.
