He split the global communist movement, and once people realized how shit the USSR had become under Stalin many Western European communists started calling themselves Trotskyists. Because left-communists were not really organised as a specific movement in the 30s and 40s, Trotskyism was essentially the only communist movement that identified problems in the Soviet Union.

Mao did the same thing in the 1960s, but Tankies don't complain about Maoists these days because contemporary Maoist orgs are almost identical to Marxist-Leninist orgs.

Lots of socialist organizations today are part of the Trotskyist tradition (Socialist Alternative in the US and Australia is the big one) and they tend to disagree with MLs and Maoists on foreign policy issues. For instance, MLs and Maoists universally support Assad and Kim Jong-Un and Putin in their conflicts against the US. Trotskyists are less willing to support anti imperialist dictators, and some even support the Islamist Syrian rebels trying to overthrow Assad.
