Because block size is limited. Everyone wants to get their transaction through, so they either have to up the miner fee or wait for a long time.
Fees rise with Bitcoin's increasing value.

Yes, the fork to Bitcoin Cash. Increased the blocksize 8x so transactions cost < ~1cent.
Meanwhile Bitcoin itself will die off as people start to realise it's fucking retarded to be paying $1 per transaction and that the blocksize will never be increased.

Bitcoin Cash just increased the blocksize to 8mb.
Bitcoin core refuses because they dont want to keep scaling as storage would become an issue.
That would also mean you'd have less nodes on the network running the blockchain. So their solution is side chains which are instant but they take a cut oy vey
