If it was the Jews it was Typhus that killed them, they simply burnt the body so no one could catch the disease from their bodies.

The "slaughtering" which is known as "Bloody Sunday" occured 3 days after the Germans invaded Poland. The people they attacked were also pro-Nazi militia known as the Selbstschutz. Said militia was beaten down by the Polacks after they engaged the Polish troops first. The Germans decided to use this as propaganda of "Poles murdering innocent Germans, we dindu nuffin".

It was an autonomous region and in a customs union with Poland, it had its own elected government (all of whom since 1933 were fucking nazi's, so that's an indication of Polands control over it) and a high commissioner appointed by the League of Nations, not a single high commissionaire was Polish or German (unless you count the Swiss guy as ethnically German). It also had its own police force made up of ethnic Germans and the only Polish military in the city were at the port and the post office
