inb4 America actually won

>Why the fuck did Americans even go to Vietnam?
To stop the godless gommies.

>And why did they get their asses kicked so badly?
As far as I'm aware, the US and AVRN were doing alright before the US started to withdraw.

>muh evil gommies gona take over asia and the whole world! domino effect!

americans are shit at fighting, they are very good at bombing shit, essentially evaporating taxpayers money without results

They were going nowhere strategically.

other countries get conquered

bobrowen.com/nymas/podcasts/Mark Moyar Vietnam.mp3

basically they were delusional about stopping communism that they sided with a ruthless dictator which pissed off the Viet Minh who assassinated him, then USA thought it was le evil commies and sent troops
If they allowed the elections to happen like it was decided in Geneva accords, Ho Chi Minh would win and there would be no civil war

The French.

liberals started the war (kennedy and johnson) then liberal hippies made sure the US lost the war to communists and blamed Nixon for it.

...

>asses kicked
muh k/d ratio, muh operational limitations (being delimited to South Vietnam), muh Nixon Paris Peace Accords, muh Democratic Senate, muh subversive hippie pawns of the KGB, muh helicopters, muh retarded Cronkite thinking the Tet offensive didn't completely ass-devastate the Viet Cong

>inb4 prager lol
come at me bitches

Pretty sure the north are the ones who jumped the gun so the US said fuck em

>As far as I'm aware, the US and AVRN were doing alright before the US started to withdraw.

Same thing could be said about Afghanistan, but in 2020, there will be US soldiers in Afghanistan that were born after 9/11 even happened.

we went because our leaders fell for the domino theory meme

we ""lost"" because we didn't want to commit to a huge ass war

Yeah, the US forces were in a stalemate since the veitkong seemed to not respond to years of getting their asses kicked, and that’s the only type of war the US knows how to fight.

We were already in a huge ass war. We got our asses kicked in said war. I don't know about you but 58,220 dead in what was supposed to be a low-intensity brushfire war against unorganized guerrillas isn't small by any means.

>58,220 dead
it's fucking nothing
British lost more in Somme during 1 day

Maybe it has to do with the fact they didn't make any offensives in North Vietnam and never actually sent troops to block the ho chi minh trail? Have you considered that?

>Why do you want to genocide me, user?

You're a dumb retard comparing two wars literally half a century apart

You're a fucking moron if you think those wars are anything alike.

because american soldiers are pussies afraid of ground combat and can only win by bombing everybody pointlessly
>got rekt in WW1
>got rekt in WW2 against german reserves, only winning because the Soviets did all the hard work
>Korea - got rekt as soon as fighting got real and Chinese joined, all you did was bomb civilians again
>Vietnam - got rekt by fucking farmers
American military is a joke

This post is most definitely not biased in anyway or completely motivated by anti-American sentiment.

>Why doesn't the US just sacrifice its troops, that's way more manly!

I assume you've served in the military, tough guy?

You are a mongoloid

>anti-American sentiment

You're right, but they were winning fights.

Afghan is different because its an insurrection.

Sorry that we don't send millions of our citizens to die like European savages.

>undermining government credibility in the eyes of the public and the international community by illegally bombing Laos and Cambodia
>drafting the oppressed downtrodden poor to oppress the downtrodden poor of another nation, making great use of minorities who wouldn't even be allowed to vote without being lynched
>committing literal war crimes and eroding what little support you had with the populace on the ground via Phoenix squads and unhinged Korean marines
>trusting a literal fucking nerd whose only wartime experience was in logistics to strategize a war 8,000 miles away from the continental US, completely detached from the situation on the ground
>despite his (((expertise))), wasted billions of dollars leading to massive inflation and ending the post-world war boom
>having no real objective besides Hold this position and hope we don't get overrun by sappers and bombing anything that moves out there without regards to the consequences

>And why did they get their asses kicked so badly?

*teleport behind you*
*don’t recognise your independence*
Heh, nothin personal kid

>fell for the domino theory mem
I don't get how this is a meme. I have literally never understood this argument with the historical context. The rest of Indochina fell immediately after the war ended. Dominoes fucking fell.

Both Laos and Cambodia fell before South Vietnam. And in both cases, Americans shooting the shit out of the areas were very influential in causing their falls to communism. Vietnam would then use its influence to attack the new communist government in Cambodia.

Right

Wrong, the Viet Cong were gone when the US left.

The North Vietnamese just replaced the VC with the NVA and kept going.

So as the insurgency gradually ended, Korean War 2.0 gradually began, and the US public had no patience for another war of attrition right after the first one.

Nixon did everything in his power to shift the blame to his predecessors, but he began troops withdrawals in 1969, despite the Joint Chiefs of Staff explicitly telling him that South Vietnamese forces couldn't make up for a US withdrawal.

Kennedy killed Diem, then he cried about it.

It's worth noting that the North Vietnamese literally invaded Laos in 1959 and forced them into being "neutral" and not fighting the Viet Cong.

The Ho Chi Minh trail was an undeclared military occupation of the easternmost boundaries of Laos and Cambodia.

The US operations in Laos and Cambodia were limited to areas under de facto North Vietnamese control. The US wasn't just bombing the shit out of Cambodians for the fun of it, the point of keeping the wars there secret was to convince the US public that the war wasn't escalating.

Domino theory isn't a meme. Look at decolonization of Africa.

Domino theory happens, but it was overestimated.
The rest of indochina wasn't strategically relevant, it would only matter if it spilled into India or something.

As an interesting side note, a few months after the first big battle of the Vietnam War, about half a million people were killed in Indonesia for being communists, which went a huge way towards containing communism in the region.

>this gook revisionism

>And why did they get their asses kicked so badly?

They didn't though? Vietnamese suffered significantly more casualties.

>We actually won the war. have you seen that PragerU video? here, imma link you.

58,220 spread over several years of war.
>Huge ass
Could have been much bigger, but Johnson kept fretting over fully committing (and in his mind starting WW3 with either the PRC or the USSR), or de-escalating (causing political opponents to attack him). This was probably something Kennedy would've had to deal with had he lived.
>Unorganized guerrillas
Alright you're fucking retarded. The Vietminh were already a well-drilled and disciplined army back when they fucked the French at Dien Bien Phu, and the leadership of both the VC and the NVA were veterans of that conflict. The NVA also enjoyed a fuckload of support from the combloc, by the end of the war they were conducting combined arms assaults across a broad front. The whole "muh couple hundred rice farmers" meme needs to die.
>domino theory meme
There were running commie insurgencies in many Asian countries during and after the war. The war resulting in a communist victory emboldened the movements in Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines to step up their efforts. Thankfully, the governments of those respective countries had learned what would happen if they lost and responded accordingly. Only one left is in Flipland, and the commies there are mostly a nuisance since their manpower is a shadow of what they used to have.
>Got rekt in WW1
... how?
>got rekt in WW2
Again, how?
>Korea
MacArthur was a dumb motherfucker and our military was massively downsized following the end of WW2. Most of the grunts in this war did not serve in WW2.
>Vietnam
Lost the war, however we never had a Dien Bien Phu and considering that our military was at its absolute worst, we did alright in terms of killing stuff.
Hey blame Kennedy for getting all the eggheads into important positions.
