Came here to post this. The similarities are kind of astounding. They're both very American versions of their respective versions that introduced very weird cosmology and history tot hose religions, as well as doctrines of racial superiority. They were also have foundational stories revolving around doubtful revelations, and fundamentalist Christians/Muslims consider them to be a separate faith entirely.

Wait fuck forgot these guys existed

Muslim Brotherhood

salafit. they made the meteor space meme

inventing weird cults? leave that to americans

I didn't know that Mormons have doctrines of racial superiority. I looked it up and I found a bunch of results about the LDS denouncing racism.

They used to disallow black clergy. They also had a pretty hard belief that blacks were the sons of Ham, and their skin color was a curse from God.

they refuted racism in the 70s desu

Dear god yes

Go to pre-1970s, before the revelation that the civil rights act was god's will

Ok, that's news to me. Thank you.

They don't anymore, but it was a pretty major part of the early church. Black people were only allowed into the priesthood in 1978, and that was because prior to that, church doctrine often included material about the curse of Ham, and other rationale for why black people were inferior. Somewhat common was the belief was black skin was a curse for doing something wrong during pre-existence. Early Mormons were also huge on slavery and Brigham Young taught that the devil was black.

Also, the foundational myth of Mormonism is very tied to moundbuilder controversy; in the 19th century, tons of explanations were put forward to explain who really built the mounds of North America because it was believed that Indians weren't capable. One of those explanations was that a group of Israelites was responsible, and Joseph Smith latched onto that. In a way, that kind of reasoning is pretty on par with the NOI's brand of afrocentrism.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Mormons and NOI are both huge wewuzzers.

Do americans have a degenerate, science-fiction inspired offshoot for every religion?

A man who claims to be a prophet.
A man who claims to have had contact with an angel.
The angel tells the man that mankind has ruined the true worship of God.
The angel gives the man a new revelation about how to worship God.
The man starts a religion.
The religion has large families and is family oriented.
The religion is works based and calls on people to be "good".
The religion is based on physical items of a supernatural nature that nobody has anymore.
In sum, a man has taught a new gospel about a different Jesus that was told to him by an angel.

Mormonism is Islam for whitey.

Yes, a new convenient revelation coming just in time to adapt to circumstances around them, just like Mohammad's convenient revelation coming just in time for him to take more wives than was permitted earlier.

Galatians 1:8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.

Hell, sometimes we don't even need the offshoot. See Scientology.

That's not exclusive to America but to all industrialized and developed countries. Lot's of cults in Japan, India, China and some of them extended into other regions like Latin America. Russia also experienced a growth in cults after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

And Raelism, which is about as sci-fi as a religion can get, is French.

U wot? Where are there whirling dances, repetitious chanting, and wandering dervishes in Anabaptistism?
