was Catholicism the worst thing that happened to Roman empire (and thus, to entire Europe i guess)? It literally caused its downfall.
How would Roman empire that survived look like if not for Christianity? Would it be more similar to China (ie: lifestyle depends on following teachings of philosophers instead of religion)?

It might have taken control of more of the world. I think things would probably be better in general.

Sardinia and Corsica shouldn't be labeled as roman provinces on that map. They wouldn't be able to reach them at this time
Jaxon Gutierrez
no, Goths and Muslims did
Easton Richardson
>Muslims. No christianity = no islam either. Arabs were too primitive to invent a religion without being inspired by christianity first.

No christianity = no byzantines.
If you don't consider the byzantines roman then you shouldn't care if Islam exists in this argument.

Rome, like all states, was doomed to die at some point. If you listen to Hobbes then you believe that it was assassinated by immediate factors such as Christianity and barbarians. Problem is, that's only a small portion of it. In truth, Rome had died long prior to the deposition of Romulus Augustulus. It's impossible to tell which even solidified the eventual fall of Rome but Diocletion's reforms, civil war, military failures, and economic failures all were the most important factors to its fall. Rome's downhill descent began immediately after 117 AD, after Roman stopped expanding, it started dying. You can consider Christianity to be a reason for its fall but it's completely wrong to say that it's 100% at fault.

>christianity ruined rome meme care to explain why the east survived for as long as it did? it's because the east had a much more solid institutions, and was far richer. Even when most of the armies were in the west the combination of ambitious barbarian generals and absolutely abhorrently weak emperors (the worst in the entire history of rome) meant that the west had little chance against the barbarians.
