ITT: Healthcare workers/students! and those that want advice!
This board used to be health and fitness, so we should have a discussion for those of us in health related fields.
What do you do? How long did it take for you to school? How does your work/school interfere with your gains?

should i take roids? or stay natty

Firefighter/EMT for a large city. I work two days every eight and enjoy five days off to sleep in as much as I want and do whatever. Lack of sleep at the firestation on 24hr shifts destroyed my gains until I got use to it.

I bought a Cardiology III at the start of August thinking I would need it for nursing school. I ended up using my ma's old classic 2 because I couldn't hear any difference. Just finished up junior year and passed my first year of clinicals. No gains to be had. I no longer had time to go to the gym. The little gains I achieved were due to a couple of dumbbells I kept in my dorm.

Ho do I fix piriformis syndrome? Has it for 2 years.

How the fuck do I learn all of med school level anatomy in two weeks if I can get myself to read a single chapter?

I'm doing ok with most other subjects, but I can't fucking stand anatomy.

I am so fucked you guys.

Stretch and get a massage, or see a PT. Seriously consider a PT, as you'll get a really good release of the LR muscles, and then they'll send you home with a stretch Rx that will be effective.

Hollywood stretch, and if you can, use a tennis ball to roll out your lateral rotators when you're sitting in a chair. You'll need to pin and stretch the Piriformis muscle, to relengthen and keep it from angrily squeezing your sciatic nerve. Unfortunately, you really can't do that on your own.

op here. I'm a first semester nursing student, just finished clinicals. I haven't been going to the gym because I suck at time management. My worst fear is being that one painfully obvious nurse that is out of shape and can't lift a patient.

Skim chapters, know functions and chemicals/hormones associated with each system for physiology
anatomy just memorize big stuff m8. best of luck

>How the fuck do I learn all of med school level anatomy in two weeks

Cant be done. Other than that, draw.fucking.everything. Arteries, nerves, muscles, topography, everything. Also, use atlas at every opportunity, look things up, read about it, look it up again, try to draw it.
Dont waste your time trying to rote memorize because you'll forget it in an instant.

I had it cripplingly bad for a while. Honestly, if you haven't taken a break from exercise in a while id recommend a 2 week complete deload along with loads of stretching and foam rolling. Massages help too. I got a steroid shot and it helped get me through the two weeks out of the gym. Only do low-intensity biking if anything

Honestly, you should already know all of that. If you cant bring yourself to read one chapter you shouldn't be in med school

Any bros can lend some advice? I know the process is very demanding and getting into a medical school is very slim but I really want to be a doctor more for prestige than money

it can be done. With amphetamemes.

I like the way you think.

Just graduated nursing school. I started lifting my junior year and that really, really helped my ability to lift and turn patients without destroying my back. Wish I had started lifting sooner like you.

That's pretty cool. How do you manage to move heavy people without throwing your back?

It's actually pretty hard with strangers. No one outright says it, but it's expected that you embody physical health as a healthcare worker.. My first clinical's were terrible because I couldn't even lift a 120 lb lady without feeling like I would drop her.

When I tried medschool, called medecine faculty in my country, and you get in right after high school, there were few 40yo with us, they were called dinosaurs. There was this 30yo+ nurse that decide to start med school, she's now an ER physician.
You need funds because you won't be making much for a little while, money aside, it's all about motivation and being organized.
Good luck!

>studying to become a physiotherapist
>learning a lot about chronic diseases
>job market oversaturated
>probably gonna have the best chance of getting a job if I work with old people
I just wanna have a comfy physio office in a gym/assist top tier athletes.
Too bad I'm not a top student (I have no discipline and I suck at studying)

I've got money, I just hate the job I'm in and was looking at a career change.

All family and friends are urging me to choose a different path because the fail ratio is quite high with medicine.

Fuck it I'm going to speak to a few universities see where I stand. Thanks bro

proper form my naga

>doctor more for prestige than money

No idea if there is age restriction for applicants but go for it if you're INTERESTED in it. No amount of prestige will give you motivation to learn mind numbing stuff (which there will be a lot of) or to grind 6-7 hours daily.

This
They offer anatomy in undergrad
Just because it isn't required for the MCAT doesn't mean you shouldn't take it

I pray you're in a European med school

use learn cards, there are some you can get for like 60$
helped me a lot

Studying medicine is a full-time activity - if you want to devote a large chunk of your life to something you really have to enjoy doing it. I'm not sure if "prestige" is a good motivation. you have to be passionate about it if you want to stay sane spending the time of your life in front of textbooks. good luck anyway

>just got into dental school after being rejected my first try
We are all gonna make it brahs

I'm doing the same, just do your masters degree. It will give you way more opportunities. Maybe you can go into teaching.

Gotta smash my exams next month to get into Pharmacy school. shitting bricks lad.
Anyone know how to make more studying gains?

Getting off Veeky Forums is probably your first best bet. Lock yourself in a room with no distractions. If you have summer break to take it, consider studying your full time job. 9-5 every day. That's how I killed my DAT. Also, amphetamines and white noise audio loops.

A lot of help. Heaviest person we lifted was 800lbs. Took about 12 people using two tarps. I don't lift people by myself if they are morbidly obese. Even if they are dying in a fire. Trying to drag anyone over 350 on carpet with Zero visibility is pretty difficult.

yeah i cant wait till I'm done with all the studying. it's gonna be hard to find a job though, wont do my masters degree before I have at least 2 years worth of working experience (also a prerequisite for most master degrees here)

That is such a true statement. Yeah my first med surg clinical I had a 110 lb elderly lady and I struggled so hard to move her. That's when I realized I needed to do something or my back was going to end my career early. I found it really difficult to go to the gym after a 12 on the unit when I had care plans to write and studying to do, so I started going in the morning and that did wonders. Just have to find a schedule that works for you. Keep on it, sounds like you're doing great!

Oh and take practice tests under real world conditions. Part of doing well is learning how to take the test. If you don't pace yourself well, you'll miss questions that you could have answered in your sleep.

Cheers, will bare that in mind. I've just been writing notes and doing papers but not under strict conditions. I guess studying without music/with whitenoise is like training for a meet and being in the zone etc

Student nurse here.

50% of course is academic, 50% is working in hospital. 37.5 hours a week.

On top of this I have to work to earn money, and write my assignments.

So as a rule I have a 50+ hour work week, plus assignments. I don't beat myself up about not making gains. I do what I can.

Lool up the anatomy coloring book and get greys anatomy flashcards. Use them both religiously.

Honestly, the flash cards and colouring books are expensive and a bit dry. There's loads of anatomy tutorials by lecturers on YouTube, I find it easy to go through those when I CBA to revise properly. Great for cranial nerves

In all honesty, medical school in the UK isn't too bad depending on where you go. Being older you'll have the work ethic to smash your exams purely because you won't waste your time aggressively socialising.
However, from my experience people your age tend to be isolated and suffer badly from not having the social support to get through medical school. If you can get in to somewhere you already live or have friends you'll be golden.

Do you guys not use turning sheets? Or are you talking about lifting them out of the bed?

Year 2 med student here. In Canada.

Happy to answer questions while I'm here.

Not sure if this counts but I just got into a histology tech program, really excited

For summer I have classes 8-5 two days a week so so it shouldnt interfere too much with getting fit, at least until clinicals start

das it mang

(i'm a doctor). 92% on my anatomy exam. my 2 week revision: read student gray's cover to cover and watched aclands twice. May have taken some nootropics

Alberta fag here, shooting to become an EMT and then possibly emt/fire. To get into EMT course they need 2 essays, one on life as a paramedic and one on why I'm qualified/should be one. For the 1st, any recommendations on the not so well known aspects of EMT life? Any advice for a newbie I'll appreciate
>Inb4 don't do it
I'm doing it

Thanks guys, didn't know about the flash cards and that video atlas. Will look into it.

Which school, if you don't mind answering? I've been considering Queen's, Memorial, and Dalhousie, do you know anything about them?

mfw being a male nurse has DESTROYED my sexuality and left me traumatized

>be me
>21 year old virgin male nurse student
>go to nursing home to practice
>instructor gets me to do a catheter on this 80+ year old retarded woman in a wheelchair
>first vagina i've ever touched
>her vagina was all weird and loose, so i felt her up a lot
>she started getting wet and gobbles like a turkey
>mfw my first sexual experience was giving pleasure to a retarded old woman in a wheelchair
>couldnt fap for weeks

Dunno why you want to know all of med school anatomy in two weeks. However, there is a golden rule in med school.

Practice questions, Practice questions, Practice questions. Also invest in an anatomy atlas (Netters).

Cardiology III or get out

>Also invest in an anatomy atlas (Netters).
You can find a torrent of the latest Netter's as well. I grabbed one for my anatomy course first quarter.

I'm an EMT/Firefighter as well. EMT school was about 6 months and I took the fire academy at my own pace through a Volunteer station. I work in Seattle. The firehouse has lifting equipment so I my gains aren't affected at all. My job is great. Lack of sleep does interfere but whenever there's no calls going out, I do my best to eat and nap.

1st year pharmacy school student (almost 2nd year, in the middle of exam week). I started lifting again at the beginning of this school year. I lifted in high school for sports and then didn't lift in undergrad and got real dyel. I figured if I wanted to be in the health care field I should be a little healthier. I also found that lifting was a decent way to manage my stress.

What's your residency/Step scores?

Internist here. Should have been a paramedic, this shit fucking sucks.

Medical intern here. I work out 3x/week and 2x/week I train discus throw and shot put.

>How long did it take for you to school?
3 years.

> How does your work/school interfere with your gains?
I work out whenever I have at least 1h of free time. Sometimes I can't sleep 7h/day. I count calories and I have to say no to seniors who buy pizza or cake. You can do it if you have strong will.

What do you do? I'm a Research analyst at Roswell Medical Center in Buffalo NY.

How long did it take for you to school? Bachelors in Psychology with a focus on addictions and psychophysiology.

How does your work/school interfere with your gains? I live 30 minutes away and need to be to work at 7am. Sleep schedule is a little lacking, but I'm usually able to find time to work out not problem.
We're currently doing work with electronic cigarettes.

The reason the fail rate is so high is because you have a lot of people who don't actually want it. You have a lot of people who are there because when they were little they heard it was a respected career so they went into it. Yet in reality, they weren't fit for most schooling much less this. Go for it user, don't worry about the haters. You have 50 good working years left in you if you take care of yourself and like your field.

das some shit mang.

Sure thing bro. Dalhousie. If you have specific questions will definitely answer to the best of my ability.
