While he was Shia, it spilt over into the Sunni world and groups like the Mujaheddin in Afghanistan, Islamic Jihad in Israel, Muslim Brotherhood, and the Ikhwan in Saudi Arabia were directly inspired by Khomeini's breed of religious regressive anti-western sentiment

The Shah was not a western puppet considering he was in his last 10-12 years breaking deals and pacts made with the US and especially the UK and France, acting independent of a lot of their demands and political pressuring and literally outing at British foreign policies current and post-WW1 and 2 in the Near East. The US even made new oil deals with the Arabs because the Shah would not be pressured to play ball and be completely compliant to them.
