Healthcare workers sound off

Whether you're a nurse, doctor, paramedic, scrub tech, trainer, etc.

Report in and tell us about your Veeky Forums career.

>studying to become physiotherapist
>like everybody else
>probably gonna end up working with old people
>would rather have a cozy office in a gym
>tfw a DYEL dude in my year is working with a physio who rehabilitates athletes who do strength training
>that DYEL dude also gives presentations about strength training
kinda jelly

I work as a massage therapist in a physical therapy, chiropractic & weight loss clinic.

Does that count?

3rd year Pharmacy
Currently Retail Intern, shit sux

Oncologist. On Veeky Forums for around six months. Love this place.

I'm not really a health & wellness guy but I repair, install, and service medical equipment.

>tfw my hospital has a union for some ungodly reason
>tfw I'm in the same pay grade as registered nurses but don't have to deal with patients at all

FUCK YOU BACON IS GOOD FOR ME

Speech and language therapist in a hospital.

>tfw dietetics staff are fat
>tfw physio are out of shape
>tfw I mumble

3rd year dentist and been here for at least 4 years.
What are you looking for OP?

Can anyone explain why I get stomach rumbles and my vision goes funny during workouts? When I Squat I get lights in my vision and sometimes everything goes a browner colour.

of course you, bunch of cancers in this bitch

4th year med student.
I thought "medicine requires a shit ton of studying" was a meme but it's real fuck

too much blood in your legs and not your brain.

I always felt it'd be pretty cool to work on the administrative or clerical side of a hospital. Anyone do that?

There is a lack of blood perfusion to your brain due to it being used in your legs. Do you do any cardio? Whats your weight and how heavy are you squatting?

Registered dietitian

>only male dietitian in my hospital and probably this side of the state
>the other dietitians are all fat women, I'm literally the only one who doesn't shovel garbage into my body
>would absolutely not trust any of them to give dietary guidance to anyone in my family

I hate the people I work with and most of my patients will disregard my counseling as soon as they're out of the hospital, no matter how close they are to an early grave due to their shitty lifestyles.

I should have been an exercise physiologist or a nurse.

breathe more faggot, don't listen to these CNA, advise-giving tards about blood in yourlegs, you need to breathe more and stop forgetting to fucking breathe when squatting. all your problems will go away if you BREATHE MORE

maybe someone here can help

i'm currently a NEET thinking about doing some self-study and taking my pharmacy technician certification, then doing that until i save up enough to go to community college and become a nurse or respiratory therapist

what do you think, Veeky Forums?

Nah I don't do cardio -- I definitely do plan on starting soon though. Got a heart rate of 73-83.

It's not heavy weight, but I lift near my 5 rep limit.

I weigh 80kg, lifting 110kg.

I do breathe deep between reps, but maybe I need to go deeper.

Depends. The guy with the issue hasn't really given us much information.
I'm assuming if he is having this issue he is probably new to squatting or his technique is off.
If he is new, then possibly his body isn't used to the movement and isn't able to circulate blood effectively, which could be due to many, many factors, such as poor cardio, overweight or underlying issues.
If his technique is off and he isn't breathing properly, then that is a possibility too.
Ideally, I would like to a see a video of him squatting to gauge technique.

I'm a doctor and my career is fucking fantastic, desu. I'm 28, starting ortho residency next year to become a surgeon, hoping to specialize in sport surgery.
I play soccer and hope to eventually get to work on A-list european soccer players.
Inherited big family money, invested it and now have shitload of money of my own just making gains by itself, so money isn't really an issue.
My work is like my hobby. To top it off, it's a sexy and fulfilling job, I've gotten to reattach partially cut off limbs of people and all kinds of crazy shit.
Also, objectively good looking, have tons of women throw themselves onto me but none that are gf material, but at 28 don't really need to settle down anyways.
Life is good.

I'm trying to accumulate as much medical knowledge as possible freely, since I have a shitty artsy degree with a dead-end job.

Pls recommend me something to learn from.
Starting strength was fun to read about biomechanics, desire to know more intensifies.

Do you only get that issue when you rep that high weight or even on your lower weight warm-up sets?
If you're only getting that issue at those high weights, then probably your body isn't used to that weight yet, especially if you have only just started repping 110kg. Give it another month and if you're still having that issue at that weight then I'd consider doing some cardio, which you should be doing anyway.
A resting heart rate of around 80 for your average person who doesn't go to the gym isn't a concern, but if you're training and trying to get fitter, ideally it should be lower.

what's the best scrub tech job i can get after

...

Wellness coordinator

My job is to motivate fatties to not be fat, so that the companies insurance costs go down.

I don't really do a whole lot other than teach some bootcamps 3-4x a day. And tell fatties how to lose weight, but they won't. No one ever says "look at that fat with great self control and determination".

What education do you have?

My brother in Law, did ultrasound tech. Now he does CAT scans. Makes pretty good money for 18months of school.

Cool story, start with netter's anatomy atlas, once you know everything perfectly get into physiology, then you are a medfag. There is no shortcut.

Just became a medic. Been an EMT for about 2 years. Feels good to keep moving.

Paramedic, prepping for Med School.

It's hard to stay on the straight and narrow whilst working full time and going to school but I'm down 50 lbs from my previous fat faggot self and I've got 20 more to go.

is that the same thing as diagnostic sonography?

my CC offers that too but it's a 2 yr program and they only have 12 slots per semester and it's hard af to get in. there are people with 25+ on the ACT and 3.5 GPAs getting turned away cause it's a small town and the only jobs here are medical shit.

i might just get my EMT and become a paramedic and life with mediocre wages forever. at least my parents will be proud of me for being a "hero" lol

I am a CPA, long story how I fell into this gig.

Lets just say, my gym bro was on the BoD, of the company we worked for.

So I got a fat ass raise, big office, flexible hours and now my hobby is my profession.

Good luck man.

My dad went EMT --> Paramedic --> PA. Not quite med school but he breezed through the classes and knew all of the trauma, emergency, and accute care shit before they even started teaching it. He had 3 kids and worked overtime every week and still pulled all A's. You can do it man, just don't give up.

Congrats on the weight loss btw. I know how tough it is working EMS and getting nothing but fast food or frozen dinners at 2 am. You'll be a good doc with that medic experience.

Foreign Med Student. 3rd year in, 4.5 more to go.

Is health care really as good as everyone says? I don't know what I want to do with my life, but I love lifting and eating healthy, and the biology behind exercise and my weight loss experience intrigued the fuck out of me and I spend hours reading about stuff like metabolism and basic organ health online. Should I go to nursing school?

Thanks for the tip. I started reading some old version of Gray's Anatomy but it's pretty tough.

Right now, I'm just doing some kindergarten stuff on khanacademy and stuff like anatomy games on android but it's better than nothing I guess.

Thanks man. Feels good to hear.

Open a gym. Do it.

PTA specializing in spinal cord injury

been trying to get some more shadowing experience + better GRE grade so i can get into a good physical therapy program

>tfw 25 this year
>tfw i feel like i'm falling behind already of people who got in right out of college

[panic intensifies]

I hear you.

> 25
> 3 years until I can get into Med school
> tfw this time next year all the faggots who applied themselves early will be doctors

Keep on keepin' on.

>going to be 25 in October
>barely have one semester of college down
>always panic at the last minute and drop out of classes because I change my mind on what I want to do
>gf just finished medical coding degree + certification and is making good money
>I'm still working as a janitor in a hospital for $8/hr

Fuck fuck fuck, I wasn't in the mood to panic about life today. What the fuck am I supposed to do guys?

You're doing fine. Just figure out what you want to do and then focus. That's it.

If you're a doctor could you prescribe test for yourself?

You already work in a hospital dude, it'll be easy to move departments. Just go to college for some health care shit and start getting bigbux, faggot.

I kind of want to be a pharmacy tech here in the hospital but without experience I'd have to take the CPhT on my own before moving into it. How tough would it be? Is that a pretty good gig? They seem to have a pretty decent job and it pays better than most other lower level jobs in my facility.

I'm a doctor in emergency medicine. I'm usually just lurking and laughing at all the false medical claims made here but couldn't be arsed to intervene.

just do it then fraggot. The only thing stopping you is procrastination.

final year pharmacist. Labcoat hides all your gains

What's the pay like for EM?

My dad does, great field.

As far as I know doctors cand medicate themselves, right?

Where's the Asian? Without one that photo is literally racism

Is walking good for the heart? Or is running the only way of training it?

My fiancée's an RPh in retail. It's crazy how much overlap retail chains demands now in terms of the responsibilities of the pharmacists. Where she works, they're responsible for:
>immunizations
>patient consultation with any new Rx
>inventory
>scheduling

She does those tasks along with arguing with doctors about dosage and interactions, fighting with angry customers, et cetera.

Sounds like a super stressful job 2bh, but her hourly rate is insane and most of her customers absolutely love her.

For

you absolutely need intensity. for obese people and elderly people it's alright to walk, but for everyone else you need to move your ass

Neuro specialist physiotherapist here.

Work predominately in an acute hospital with aquired brain injury and stroke.

I get patients walking again and I fucking love my job as it keeps me super fit.

That said went down with an inguinal hernia from catching an obese patient

"B-BUT MY WEIGHT DOESN'T AFFECT YOU, user."

> As a former EMT, fuck that shit, you are always better going nursing than EMS. Always, always, always.

Seconded

I used to be a sonographer and now I'm a paramedic.

Most schools do radiation technology programs to evolve into stuff like CT and mri techs. Diagnostic sonography usually branches to ob/gyn, cardiac, vascular, or general ultrasound like abdominal diagnostic methods. I personally did cardiac which was echocardiography and now I work as a field medic, so I gained a lot of great heart knowledge before going into the field.

Where are you from? Do you have a master's degree?

What did you do to get your job?
How do i get into your field?

Tough? Man, every education path is tough in its own way. Maybe it's full of bs. Maybe it's full of math. Either way it's always going to be a lot of work.

If you're scared of that, that's fine. We do need people to flip out burgers.

I went into nursing school (Bachelor) for exactly those reasons, first 2 years where ok, enjoyed the internships, in the third year i found out that it wasn't for me. You should probably do something medical/healthcare related, but pleaze look further than nursing, wish i did that 3 years ago.

I'm a cancer researcher and med school reject. I'll get it next time for sure.

Currently in physiotherapist school. They actually tell us never to try and catch a patient, even if on stairs.

Never attempt to catch a pt, damn son didnt they teach you anything. Had my first fall as a cna last week and i just watched the old lady fall. Im not fucking up my back trying to add a month or two to some old fucks life and ruin mine.

the reasons you mention where also part of my reasons why i went into it, i studied it a few years, never a boring day, but i eventualy found out that it wasn't for me.
You should probably do something medical/healthcare related, but pleaze look further than nursing.

EMR now, going into EMT hopefully in august. Looking forward to it

Yea I remember being told nurses and CNAs are 5x more likely to injure their back on the job. Especially the nurses at the hospital I used to visit. Most were petite asians

do veterinarians count?

Just started out as EMT. The job is just transferring patients no emergencies really. Everyone is cool to work with. Usually only get 2-5 calls a day. Lots of waiting around in the rig.

Still undecided whether to get into FF/Paramedic or nursing. I'm leaning towards nursing since I can't stand down time..

So tell me doc: what's the best way of having good sleep?

and what should I do if alarms don't wake me up enough?

>EMR now, going into EMT hopefully in august. Looking forward to it

Good luck, but seriously, get out of EMS. It is a trap.

>Still undecided whether to get into FF/Paramedic or nursing. I'm leaning towards nursing since I can't stand down time.

Nursing. Being a Firefighter/EMT wasn't bad when I was younger, but you'll make 50% more getting a 2-year RN. Better off doing that than spending about the same time going through EMT -> (maybe AEMT) -> Medic. Also, you get better hours, have a hell of a lot better unions, and can get the magical 3 12's full time shifts. Imagine only 3 work days for full-time wages.

You'll likely experience a fuck ton more mandatory with EMS. Oh you want to go home? Sorry, you can't, your replacement didn't show and you are legally obligated to stay. Hospital staffing can be shit, but generally not that shit.

The thing is, once you hit medic, you are pretty fucked since there aren't really programs out there to transition into anything higher level. Medic to RN programs are rare as fuck.

A 2-year ASN RN, however, will naturally go into a BSN, then even a MSN Nurse Practitioner where you can make six figures and even open your own clinic in some places. Hell, a lot of nurse practitioners are doing DNPs and getting the "Dr." title. If you really don't want much responsibility, LPNs even in boonies can start at $20 hr. and only take a year at a vo-tech school.

>I'm not fucking up my back trying to add a month or two to some old fucks life and ruin mine.

This is precisely why I decided on getting my masters in counseling. Pay isn't spectacular, but you just sit and listen to people's bullshit, then diagnose them, and bill their insurance. All the while maintaining maximum comfy.

5th year dentalfag, graduating in 24 days

>mfw

Also almost finished my cut after 7 years of lifting and bulking, i'm at around 85-90% of my natty potential.
This is a present i made for myself for finishing dental school

Thanks man for the info. Nursing is definitely a lot more stable.

congratz bro

Registered nurse here.
Work in pediatric oncology unit cause i had leukemia when i was a teenager.
Dont really have to use any of the strength i gained in the gym cause everybody weighs less than 120lb.
Saddest thing is seeing these pretty 12-15 year old girls that know that they are going to die but try to put up a facade of how they have accepted it when they havent. I almost always tear up when i gotta do post mortem care on them.

Its calledbthe valsalva maneuvar. Happens to old patients all the time when they take a dump. You gotta breath properly during squats or else your intrathoracic pressure will increase too much and cause it

4th year med student in Greece. Hoping to take the USMLE exams after finishing med school and seek a residency position in the US.

I'm starting Med school now, but worked as a Medical assistant in a pediatric office for a summer in college.

>about 10 doctors all female except for one old guy
>between 20-30 Medical assistants, phlebotomists, lab techs, front office. All female
>clinic manager feels my biceps and gives me back massages whenever she walks by me
>pretty much impossible to hide boner in scrubs
>front office girl asks for my phone number so I can tutor her in math
>start banging everyday after work
>she was Latina, about 5'3, couldn't have weighed more than 100 pounds
>would throw her around, hold her up, etc
>other HIGH TEST Colombian medical assistant with a kid shows me a picture of some Ronnie Coleman looking bodybuilder on instagram. Tells me if I looked that she would marry me
>tell her I would never marry someone with a kid and she was too big for me
>reports me to HR
>got fired like a week later
>gf at the time goes through my phone, sees the texts between me and Latina petite qt, breaks up with me.

2013 was a good summer

>be in grad school for physics
>tell normies that I'm a physicist
>"Oh is that right user? I recently have this pain in my neck that I don't know where it came from, can you look at it?"
>mfw they're serious

Fresh PharmD here, fuck retail.

shit sucks so hard man, retail can kiss my fucking ass that shit is slave work

I'm headed into fire myself. I got connections to a bunch of houses in my city so it should be OK. I wanted to smoke jump but they told me ill be better off in city.

There is no rush like being in a fully involved structure.

Damn you must have to listen to a lot of idiots talk on your couch about their bad marriage. Sucks you have to deal with that outside of work, at least you taking all those cocks dollaradoos though

>they ask what else I study
>tell them also that I also do math
>"Oh really user? Quick what's 44583920 times 949964?"
>mfw

Wow so you live in a trailer park? I hear if you're not careful it will blow up. Anyways I wouldn't tell to many people that, they might call the cops.

Believe it or not normies are actually this retarded.
So you've heard about the dumb fucking bitch who delayed the flight's take off because she though an economist's equations were Arabic? The western world is fucked

Personal trainer including qualifications allowing for referral from medical professionals, I'm also qualified to train special populations (kids, elderly, disabled, ante/post natal).
It is great, I charge people £30 an hour to listen to where they are going on holiday and show them a few exercises and check their form, sometimes I train with them, sometimes I just watch them run on a tread mill or rowing machine (most people can't use a rowing machine properly).
I average at least 15 hours a week of returning clients, about 5 sessions (30 minutes to an hour) a week of people just dropping in and about 2 new clients a week referred from local GPs (medical doctors).

I set up a xbone in the gym I work at's staff room and my and other staff play Fifa when it is quiet.
Sometimes my clients invite me to nights out and birthdays, which pretty much act as networking events for me, I can get at least one new client per outing.

The only down side to the job is that I tend to work the hours of 0600 - 0900, 1100 - 1300, 1700 - 2000 during peak times of the year, I could simply not show up, but I enjoy making money too much and I don't have a social life.
I work pretty much around the clock in December - February and throughout summer.

Oh and I look pretty mediocre, I've never really cut, I just don't let myself get fat, advanced lifts for my weight (190lbs) and I can run a 10k in 44 minutes 40 seconds.

Does anyone else have an injury-phobia due to their studies and job nature? Im a med student and I really like lifting, but I can't help but think that one day, no matter how good my form is, I ll snap my shit up and I 'll have to do tedious rehab, be afraid for the rest of my life or even end up with chronic pain or a cripple from osteoarthritis when I grow old enough. Do you ever get such thoughts? I usually get them at night before bed, especially if I'm chilling on Veeky Forums and a bunch of injury threads come up. I can tell that sometimes I become kind of paranoid but does anyone else get the same thoughts?

pharmfag (uk)

work on a university campus. since i manage the store, i decided to start selling gym related lines (mostly edibles). interestingly the number of students asking for lifestyle advise also increased. majority of it is for weight loss - blanket advise is to eat below tdee (told one guy to visit scooby's website for the calculators and meal planning), lift weights regardless of gender and do some cardio.

some fatties just want to use alli but i always get them to try above first. less then 10% bother to come back to report results, all of which is positive (i guess the other ~90% never tried or failed)

Hypnotist. Mostly pain management, weight loss and smoking cessation. Sometimes (e)sports related shit.

Being fit is part of the image game.

Im a PCA or nurses aid. Gonna be a travelling nurse. I also worked in my hospitals psych unit

Histotech. I prepare tissue for pathologists (get body parts and cut them up). Get it cut, stained, and on slides. Occasionally assist with autopsies. At a children's hospital.

Student murse checking in. I thought I'd be living the dream
i'm not someone please help
I recently graduated with a BS in biology with the intent to go to med school, but my dumb ass fucked up my undergrad so that's out of the question now.

My family had been trying to convince me to look for some accelerated post bac RN programs, but I don't know anything about those. Does anyone have experience with something like that? Is a BS in bio a decent enough background to get your foot in the door for some decent professional programs? I don't mind going back to school. Ive been debating going into EMS just to dive into the medical field seeing as I don't have much medical experience.

>At a children's hospital.

Are you a robot? How long did it take to become numb to it?
