Why didn't Britain ally with the central powers in ww1?

Why didn't Britain ally with the central powers in ww1?

They were allies with Prussia for hundreds of years. What did Wilhelm 1 do to anger them?

Also, the Anglo Japanese alliance in 1902 was anti-Russian, not anti-German

1) Britain's general policy goal since at least 1600 was to keep anyone from getting too strong on the continent.
2) Willy built up a fuckhuge fleet; it still wasn't in a position to challenge the RN, but it was easily the second strongest fleet in 1914; anyone challenging British naval supremacy was a threat.
3) You have some severe friction with Germany over Morocco.

Happened for economic resons. Germany had surpassed Britain in crucial fields and thus needed to be "contained" no matter the cost.

1) I know that

2)Did they tell him to stop?

And America had surpassed both of them; somehow you don't see Britain feeling a need to contain the U.S.

Then what else needs to be said?

Seriously, have you never heard of this?

America surpassed them at the expense of Britain. They only entered WW1 to make sure Britain would be on the winning side so they could pay back their loans, which basically makes Britain the US' bitch until today.

>the US entry changed the tide of WW1
in your dreams

Without the prospect of the US pouring fresh cannon fodder onto the battlefield the OHL wouldn't have given up.

U.S. had passed the UK and Germany both in things like coal and steel production over a decade before WW1. Again, you don't see any sort of British nervousness over that particular economic development.

They're also not in Europe. You're much more invested in what your direct neighbors are doing in your back yard than you are what some guy a few block away.

So, in other words, this post is wrong. Glad you agree with me.

a century ago the world wan't globalized. America was on the rise, that's correct but nowhere near being an Empire. Britain's imperial ambitions were directed against the immediate neighbourhood.
As one example they had switched their fleet's fuel from coal to oil. The US didn't challenge their presence in the Middle East, the Berlin -Baghdad railway did.

>the US is the only fresh Canon Fodder

>What did Wilhelm 1 do to anger them?
It was Willy 2 not 1 that was in power when the two nation’s relationship ended, had Frederick III not died in 1888 the Anglo-German alliance would have been fully consolidated and WWI likely would have France, Russia, and AH vs UK, Germany, and the US.

Not only, but that was pretty much their impact. It's not like they did the heavy lifting. Same goes for WW2. Late to the party to protect their own interests.

What did he do?

started building a pretty successful Empire.

Britons are incompetent, That's why.

And why didn't they negotiate?

I suspect hybris on both sides. Also there's only ever one real Empire. Any challenger has to be brought down. See Cold War for Britain's imperial successor, the US.

Exactly. The US army had barely a modicum of relevant experience in war (Spanish-american war) at the time. Once they landed in Europe, the French had to teach the Americans how things were in modern war so that they didn't suicide themselves too much. The French also didn't want any American officers higher than the rank of sergeant, and wanted to place the American forces under the command of a French general.

Furthermore, the US marines' first real engagement was in a forest, where they just charged in and got slaughtered to a man.

(You) when you say empire

What country are you from?
