at certain positions in football, it is beneficial to have the excess weight to make you harder to push. If you want to see jacked people, look at the positions who dont play on the front line.

Offensive linemen only work on sprinting and gaining mass (plus football practice), they don't do cardio, except maybe in the offseason.

In gridiron it's more about recovery rate than aerobic capacity, you can have a great recovery rate and work capacity while at high bodyfat levels.

Cardio is between 70-85% of your maximum heart rate. Linemen train mostly at 95-100%, there are almost no cardio gains from that. Yes, your heart does get better at pumping blood but that's it.
I'm not an NFL coach, maybe they do some cardio coming off the post season until the beginning of the offseason, but almost all the work they do are very short sprints that have nothing to do with cardio.

For a tackle speed and mass are the most important things, so fat can be useful. Running backs for example are way leaner.

Linemen like every other position do cardio in offseason and during the season. I'm not sure about higher levels but every practice in junior leagues has cardio at the end to build up endurance. Players need to be able to keep up with 4 quarters of play and possibly go into overtime. If the linemen get too winded at the 4th quarter they start fucking up hard and can lose their team's lead. I've seen it tons of times where the really fat fuck o-lineman can't last the 4th and let in a sack that turns into a game winning play.

Just like in basketball, there are a ton of 7+ foot centers that couldn't run for shit and it worked just fine cause their job is to jog from basket to basket and essentially stand there.

Look at some baseball players. Fat pitchers, fat batters. They can get away with it because the focus of their job isn't to run fast or be particularly athletic.
