- your body composition (% muscle vs % fat)
- what you ate during the day (did you kick start your metabolism with high fat/protein diet?)
- what you've been eating lately (are you in ketosis?)

Go read some studies or something. Don't read any fucking articles because they often jump to conclusions based on a billion assumptions. Read the abstracts to the studies and interpret it for yourself.

Sorry, but I'm a little lazy right now to find one for you. From what I gather, if your defecit is too low, you begin to burn a worrisome amount of muscle compared to bodyfat. That's just a guess, though. But, logically, I think we'd all be on 12 Calorie/Day diets if that wasn't the case.

Also studies have shown that in calorie restriction a higher protein intake will help lower the muscle loss. There will always be some though.

A) it's vastly exaggerated
b) the point at which it would kick in means that you're certainly losing fat anyway, just not as high a proportion

You lose both muscle and fat. And no, you don't have to eat nothing to have ur body eat its own muscle. Its normal after weight loss in general to lose muscle and fat. Losing JUST fat is not metabolically efficient and that's not how the body works.

The problem with so called 'starvation mode' is two-fold:

You risk losing muscle as well as fat

People often go on binges after periods of tight calorie restriction (i.e. eating more than double what they did before the restriction)

These two things cause the yo-yo diet effect that neuro-typicals often suffer from.

It is almost always preferable to gain weight slowly and lose weight slowly if you don't want to gain fat, lose muscle, or lose motivation.

If you eat below your Resting Metabolic Rate, your body will thing you're starving and will do what it can to prevent further weight loss.

Basically don't go below this number (Approximate. Could be higher if you have a lot of muscle)

real science indicates yes your body will eventually start to lower its BMR to compensate for reduced calories and this is in addition to a lower requirement based on decreased overall mass.

you should always eat very close to your daily requirements but most importantly if you are trying to recomp your body from fat to lean you need to limit insulin spikes.

Holding on to fat from calorie deficit actually first came from retards who started dieting but couldn't lose weight. Calories in/calories out doesn't matter much at all.
Put someone on unhealthy snack diet at 2500 calories and someone on a healthy diet like brocolli, eggs, nuts, fruit, lots of water, carbs only before sport and then stuff like salmon, chicken at 4000 calories, most people eating swcond diet will lose more weight as the food will
- have actually less than 4k calories because protein has to be counted.differently
- less of it will get absorbed because different foods move at different speeds, you actually shit unabsorbed calories..
