because they can. while of course not applying 100% of the time the strict discipline required for this hobby also reflects to other aspects of life. people who advocate right wing politics are usually well off and thus feel like their quality of life they worked hard for should be protected while leftists never accomplished anything (at least anything of monetary value) and therefore want to spread the wealth because (and they often pretend this is a coincidence) they would benefit from it.

I haven't researched any of this at all, which is why I said experience. In my experience, the type of people who lift and actually make progress tend to be ones who have more self-determinant ideologies, which are usually more right wing people.

Because athletes appreciate the results of hard work. Try telling a powerlifter that he has to distribute his total amongst some beginners and see how that goes.

I found most people who get really successful at something (Fitness, sports, business, making money, art, math, science, whatever) are simply apolitical.
They just don't give a fuck about politics. They recognize it's a waste of time and they don't cling to any ideology, instead they focus on what matters and what brings them joy and happiness.

You should talk to those people more. What I've found is those "apolitical" types typically actually do hold pretty strong beliefs one way or the other, maybe not with political parties themselves but the ideologies underlying them.
Particularly in areas where one "side" is prominent, the other puts on airs. Out in my country small-"city" my liberal friends "just aren't in to politics" but can get pretty passionate when I'm talking to them one on one.
When I was in university I used to constantly say I wasn't into it or didn't pay much attention, when in reality I pray to god that the far right parties in Europe make gains before the entire continent becomes one ambiguous mocca colored mass of low-lifes and corporate drones with no sense of identity, history, or self worth.

I do sometimes but they seem almost entirely centrist and rational, if they have any interest.
Rather than clinging to an ideology like that right or left does they think issues out sensibly.
A few rich friends I've talked to about politics and they didn't know a thing -- although it could be possible they simple didn't want to discuss it but they were acting *too well*.
Like i can't think of a single time when they brought up political issues now that I think about it, in any capacity. Eh, it's not so much the hive mind as it is the underlying understanding that "freedom" has context. You can't threaten someone, for example, and say it's free speech. The defense of it then comes to deciding what constitutes a threat.
