Veeky Forums APPROVED MARTIAL ARTS •Any Martial Art that allows you to practice against an UNWILLING opponent Examples (but not limited to): Judo, Boxing, BJJ, TKD, Muay Thai, Sambo, Kyukushin
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A MARTIAL ARTS GYM: •Physically conditioned, fit participants •Trainer with certified professional record and a training history with at least one athlete who competes successfully •Sparring, "aliveness" in training •At least one participant competes at amateur or professional level •Physical conditioning part of training
WHAT TO BE WARY OF: •Fat, physically subpar students and instructor •Graduation fees (e.g. "pay $200 and advance to next belt extra quick!") •No proven athletes training there •No sparring, moves shown are choreographed (e.g. "the attacker does this, then I do this, then you do this...") •Cult-like atmosphere •No physical conditioning
I got banned from /r/mma for calling someone a cuck. There's that.
Grapplers I bought a 140lb combat dummy and it's one of the best workouts and training ever. We just suplex and judo throw the thing for like an hour. 140 doesn't sound like a lot but in the shape of a person who is dead weight it's pretty heavy. Highly suggest.

Judo or boxing?
Judo pros: Lifting is not a bad thing. Grappling seems bomb.
Judo cons: 36 min drive (> 1 hour RT) Scene is weak near me
Boxing pros: Probably put me in the shaoe of my life. Asrenakine like nothing else. Only 10 min away (20 RT)
Boxing cons: Lifting probably bad, esp. as a manlet Getting my bells rung (down the road)
I'm imagining price will be similar or maybe judo is a little cheaper.
Both places reputable (boxing place run by Floyd Patterson's son)

I've been stress eating and binge drinking, missing bjj classes as a result. My professors would be ashamed of me.

You are right, because lifting more will help your judo while more cardio will help you boxing, but either will be served with more strength.
What you should do is a trial of each one and see which one you enjoy more. Also, see which one has more practical technique implementation. Judo will call it randori and boxing will call it sparring. But of which are trying to land what you learned on an unwilling opponent.
Most of all just see which one you like and stick with it. On the other hand, there are many that do both judo and boxing to train the 'poor man's mma.'

Went to my first BJJ class last night, spent a solid hour getting absolutely wrecked by everyone, though they were all super helpful and told me what I was doing wrong. Was pretty fun, think I'll stick with it.
