I never even mentioned that I like khomenei or the new government. There were and are far better alternatives. I just fundamentally disagree with the shah and his industrial development plan because it was incredibly flawed in an economic sense. It turns out that paying Americans to build everything for you doesn't actually end up resulting in a strong vibrant economy but rather one that depends on other countries to keep going. Look at saudi Arabia for instance, it's an incredibly rich country with no indigenous capabilities whatsoever. Everything is build and kept running by different countries and this is not a symptom of a developed, first world country.

Also, it's bullshit to pretend that the shah built up all of Iran's industrial and petrochemical capabilities. Over the last 30 years, the country had made massive strides in indigenous industrial development. We've gone from being incapable of building our own kitchen knives and toothbrushes to building pretty decent oil refineries and machines and shit. Even in the car industry where we haven't done particularly well, we've gone from building purely foreign designs to at least trying to building our own. While it's stupid trying to think of alt-history, I think it's safe to say that these developments wouldn't have necessarily taken place under the shah's regime because of the sheer incapability of iranians firms to compete with more efficient American firms.
