Ex-fat here. I have the same issues.
I only ever do leangains or intermittent fasting variants when maintaining or bulking.
Just counting calories always fucks me up and makes me gain weight back. The issue is that your former fat cells are still just "deflated" and always read to nab up that extra energy, so you have to use tricks to get around the problem like manipulating insulin spikes and meal timing. It's fucked up, but it's the price we pay.

You upped your calories by like 1000 and too quick. You should have tapered back up to maintenance or ate just at maintenance for like a month. Your surplus should be like 200 calories to start with and then see how mh you gain after 2 weeks. You should be gaining no more than 2lbs a month doing a lean bulk. Ideally closer to 1.6

Me too, I am also formerly overweight.
I honestly think it's partly genetic, sure I can keep it under control but it's not like I don't have an urge to eat more than I do, from talking to people that doesn't always seem to be the case.
You get used to going to sleep when you're hungry though, so I wouldn't say it's an excuse to stay overweight.
Lifting at 1700 is what was most effective for me losing weight, I am 6ft1 went from 125-130 kg (not 100% sure) to 85kgs
