There were lots of reasons why the whites lost:

1.) They sided with the western allies which made them appear as foreign puppets to most (which wasn't far from the truth)

2.) They were pro-continuing WW1 which was DEEPLY unpopular in Russia. This is the main reason that doomed the whites and why so many sided with the reds according to mos thistorians

3.) They tried to maintain the old russian empire, which drove ethnic minorities from their ranks. Though later after defeating the whites, the soviets would also move on the independent territories of the former russian empire

4.) The whites were officer-bloated and top-heavy and aristocratic in their nature. The strongest white army (Deniniken's South Russian Volunteers) had 300,000 men, of which 80,000 were officers (including 200 generals) and they all expected a position fitting for their rank and considered frontline fighting beneath them. They treated common soldiers like garbage whereas at least in appearance the bolsheviks were more equal.

5.) The whites antagonized swathes of the population against them, such as peasants when they expropriated resources/land, the re-institution of landlords in areas they controlled, and Jews with all the pogroms, causing more support for bolsheviks.

6.) The surprising military skill of Trotsky. He is one of the most underrated commanders in history. He inherited a really catastrophic situation and turned it into victory through 24/7 work. Inb general, a lot of skilled up-and-coming officers like Bruislov tended to side with the Reds as they were disenfranchised with the Tsarist regime and associated the white movement with it.

7.) The whites had too many conflicting agendas. This is of course a key one. There were monarchists, clergy, western-style liberals, ethnic minorities, mensheviks, socialist revolutionaries, nationalists, militarists, etc all among the whites and they never got along very well or coordinated much of anything.
