Europeans and Asians had to live by scarcity; their food would be gone seasonally, so they had to have the brain to manage for time. This is why Agriculture started in the first place, because humans cant survive and grow in the winter.

The Congo river is famously non navigeable. It's so steep and has so many waterfalls that you can pretty much only ever go on it one way, which is downstream. Not even steamboats were able to reliably get up that thing, and believe me Europeans tried. In the end it ended up bring more reliable to actually send goods, people, and even steamboats themselves upstream via train, and then ship them back downstream via boat.
