Japan does have nationalists who deny/reject/revise warcrimes committed in WW2, but that's not the whole of Japan and not even the majority of Japan, these are fairly fringe ideas.

What you're conflating is Chinese/Korean propaganda of extorting money/reducing Japan's influence in trade relations/corruption. Why does this work? Keep repeating a lie 100 times and people's will accept it, no matter how erogenous it may at first seem. Human minds don't work at 100% all the time, our rational side only works some of the time.
