>2016 >still using iron for weights I don't get it. When lifting big, we need to use massive iron weights which take up a lot of room in the gym, making it a hassle for everybody. Why don't they make weights out of osmium? It is the heaviest safe metal on the periodic table, so I don't see why not. They would be smaller (due to high density), safer, and more compact; the gym would be able to buy more of them since they won't take up so much room.
How easy is osmium to forge and make weights out of compared to vinyl or iron?
Jackson Green
lol this accessibility to osmium costs abillity to forge sage your thread etc
Kayden Lewis
Osmium costs $13,000 per kilogram(or 2.2lbs). That's why.
Jordan Evans
>let's use Osmium for weights What a fucking faggot
Josiah Ramirez
yeah but it's less dense so it would cost more like 13 $ A kg of osmium is about 30lbs
Justin Cox
A kg is a kg you idiot
Ethan Lee
If i mine osmium on the moon where everything is weightless, is the osmium free?
Nolan Barnes
yeah but for water because it has 1:1 density
Easton Roberts
What has less braincells, you or a rock?

you fucking idiot take a kg of feathers and a kg of iron basic science here okay listen which one would hurt more when it falls on your foot? iron? yes? because earth pulls it more so it has more weight you fucking idiot

Lol. I'm dying. What weighs more, a kg of feathers or a kg of iron?

You took it too far, bro
Charles Thomas
A kilo of iron obviously. Iron is a fuck load heavier than feathers.
Sebastian Nguyen
>A kg of osmium is about 30lbs How the fuck can you weigh something out to know its a kg but it ways 30lbs
yes, but it also weighs nothing so it will be useless for gains
Lincoln Price

then why doesn't everything weigh the same?

Because not everything weighs a kg. For example you retard my car doesn't weigh a kg
Matthew Cook
How more compact would osmium weights be?
lets take a look
Density : 22.59 g/cm3
lets asume a disk 25cm in diamtere and 4 cm in width. (about a standard big disk for a dumbell)
its volume is 12.5x12.5x3.14x4cm=1962cm3
that gives us about 44321grams. or about 44kg
now lets weight the bar, if it has a diameter of 4 and a lenght of 25cm it would weight 7kg
so all in all you would have a 100kg dumbell of about the same size of an iron 10kg one. And it will cost 1.3 million dollars I know op is retarded in his lack of understanding of basic physics, but he has a fair point, as long as you think of it as a toy for rich people rather than something for mass use.
Also, another question, what if in a hypothetical far away future we saw a reduction in the cost of osmium because of asteroid mining?
Colton Moore
well its impossible to weigh a kilo of feathers without it going everywhere
seriously, imagine youre a billionare weight lifter, woudlnt you spend 1.3 million on a super small dumbell?

There we go, 2nd round of bait boys.
Ryan Ramirez

Robert Robinson
a fucking 100kg bar
it would be fun like a surrealist experience, imagine you go into some millionares house and hes squating just a bar and you say, HEY I CAN DO THAT you try and have to be taken to the hospital there the billionare meets you and says
YOU SEE SUCH IS THE POWER OF MONEY YOU THINK ITS EASY BNUT ONLY THE ME CAN TAKE IT
>If I ever become a billionaire I'm going to get Osmium weights so I can squat me some millions This is a brilliant idea. I'm putting it on my list of wacky shit I'd do if I got stupid rich.

Michael Ward
>osmium youre fucking retarded. you sound like a fucking high schooler that just learned in chemistry class today that there are heavier metals. you stupid fucking idiot. do you realize how much it would cost to have osmium weights? we use iron because its the cheapest thing there is for how much it weighs.
Aaron Cook
I'm actually working on this. You can find 180kg (lmao4plt) of Osmium in 1 million metric tons of earth. I could sell that shit for about 5.5 million dollars. One excavator could do the job in about 25 years. All I need is to pick the osmium out of the earth and forge the weights and bar. Probably gonna get some gypsies to help me out.
Luis Jones
>Iron is the cheapest by weight. Water is probably the cheapest thing by weight.
Iron is the cheapest thing that is durable and relatively easy to make into weights. If you're poor, you can make huge gains with some sand, a couple of heavy duty sandbags, some nylon straps, a random iron pipe with some holes drilled in it and a platform to have decent rom despite the large bags. Or just use metal buckets filled with sand.

i would also stop being racist for a girl like that

You're confusing weight with mass dumbass. Weight is the force of gravity. Mass is how much stuff there is.
Levi Rodriguez
A 20 kg iron bar bell would only weigh 57 kg if you made it from osmium. Not 100 kg.
David Bell
Then you were never racist in the first place

A better question is why there isn't plates made of Lead instead of iron
Ayden Harris
Leads are for dogs dumbass

Osmium is literally the least abundant stable element in the Earth's crust. I'd be shocked if the entire amount that's ever been mined would be enough for one whole gym. It's at
